I want to give something to a half feral cat to help him get rid of his fleas. What is not only the cheapest, but easy to give to a shy cat from pills to collars?

Avoid collars at all costs! Some can be toxic, and even the best of them are only effective where the collar touches the cat (ie unless the flea comes into contact with the collar or the fur/skin in contact with it the flea will be unaffected).

It doesn't cost a huge amount to treat one cat anyway. If the cat is comfortable with brief handling I'd go for a spot on treatment such as advantage or frontline. It works, it only takes a few seconds to apply, and it will treat the whole cat.

Sprays are more traumatic for the cat than the spot on treatments IMO - I certainly remember the bad old days before the spot on treatments came onto the market...the cats hated it with a vengeance (and they were all fully tame and handleable before we tried it). It was always a chase round the house one by one (the untreated ones getting harder to catch as they realised what we were doing) followed by glares and sulking. I can pretty much guarantee it would wreck any trust you've built up with this cat so far.

I don't have experience of oral meds so I can't advise you there. I truly think that frontline/advantage is your best choice. Be wary of the cheaper knock offs as I have heard of major problems with some of them. I'm not saying your cat would definitely have a bad reaction, just that with a semi feral I wouldn't take the risk as treating (or even seeing) a negative reaction would be much harder.

It's wonderful that you're looking out for this boy. I'm sure he's grateful :)
