Question about fixing a half-feral

Hi! I want to have this somewhat feral cat fixed, but I'm wondering what I would have to do with him after surgery. Can he go back outside, or will he need to be kept in the safety of my porch? (I can't keep him inside, but can make the porch a very cozy place for him to stay.) If so, how long until I could let him outside again?

Whenever he seems ready he can head outside. The catch and release program releases them right after being neutered.
