I need some help guys. Okay so my cat had her babies around 11:30 last night on the floor in front of my bed. (Im 15 and have had many cats before but never been too involved in the births). Everything seemed fine when i woke up. She had one already cleaned up and her other was being cleaned as i watched. Then she pulled a bloodyish type lump out of herself, which i figured was the afterbirth meaning she was done having kittens. I woke up a few hours ago to find another kitten (solid white) in the box with her. The afterbirth thing was about the size of one of the kittens so i was concerned. By the way shes not a very big cat, shes kind of medium sized. Thanks for the help. ~Beth

Hi Beth,

There is usually a placenta after every kitten, so what you saw probably was afterbirth. It just didn't mean she was done having her kittens yet. Take a look at this article, it will explain in more detail.

http://www.thecatsite.com/a/help-my-cat-is-having-kittens

How is she now? Are the kittens all doing OK?
She and the kittens seem to be doing fine. I only saw one of the kittens born so thats probably why I didn't see the other afterbirth parts. They're sleeping soundly and seem to be doing great. They're all beautiful too :)

Update: Ive been watching the kittens and they are plump and adorable. They're definitely eating well and Pumpkin is a great momma. She's actually really gentle with the dogs coming to investigate the kittens in her box which I thought would cause a problem with her being protective. The babies and momma are all doing quite well though.

Excellent! I would be careful with the curious dogs however, that they not disturb the newborns for now. Just keep an eye out. Usually mama cats want peace and quiet and a dark place in the first couple of weeks. Can you put them in your closet with the door cracked? Glad all went well!

I'm keeping the dogs away mostly but one of my dogs (hes fairly small, really gentle around the kittens) he sleeps in my bed with me at night but seems to be doing okay with the new edition. My sisters pup is not allowed in my room however because shes young and likes to play so I dont want her hurting the kittens

Yes, I think I do agree.  Not so few dogs are good help-moms and caretakers, not unique at all.  The probier-stone if the mom allows them near.

It is wise you held the puppy away.

did youu mean they are problem-prone? As they tend to cause problems?

nay, a probier stone is something to test if its the real thing, its such a figure of speech.

The mother cat doesnt seem to mind if the dog comes around. I also was afraid to touch them because I didnt want her to get mad or disown the kittens but she's actually let me pet her and the kittens and had no problems with it at all

Cats won't disown their kittens just because they got human scent on them, the only way they disown them is something is wrong with them or they not a good mother

Question: when should I expect to see the kittens eyes opening?

7 to 10 days. Can go up to 14. Not every kitten opens them on the same day. Never pry them open because it can cause damage. They still do not see really well for a few more weeks after they open. :)

I suppose there were some extra unlucky situation.   As said, its very rare, essentially a myth.  Rabbits may do it.  I though roe deers do it, but it seems to be in part a myth too: at least seen on youtube several examples where their kid "fawn" got in troubles alike falling in a cellar hole, friendly humans helped it out, the  roe deer momma waiting nearby, and happily fetching her kid and off to the woods together.

We had examples on this forum where even semi-feral cat moms fetched their healed kitten several days after injury and caretaking. - Yes astonishing.  Both examples were from India, so I almost suspect they may have a local subspecie extra friendly with humans...   But still.  It awakes thoughs.   :)

So I came home last night around 1 am and I realized the kittens were gone. I looked around and I was so upset thinking something had happened to them because they were nowhere to be found. In a last attempt of finding them I looked around in my closet and found them, she had moved them into my closet past some boxes into a small cubby of space on the bottom of my shelf. I was so relieved when I found them
