I have to admit that I'm not thrilled about natural flavor and gums in Nutro Natural Choice, either, but the cats love it and it's the surest way to get them to eat at night, particularly the cat who barfs during the night if she's hungry! The gums don't seem to bother the cats, though I'd love to find some other canned foods that don't have them: the problem is that no-potato, no-carrageenan, low-carb, no-pea food is already asking so much of the pet food industry that the options are severely limited! I've thought about increasing their rations of raw food but am not sure that's a good idea, either, because I'm afraid they'll get bored, due to limited selections. (And I'm just not ready for homemade!) Beyond that, what they're getting is working.

At least until last night when somebody (most likely Ireland, the lynx mix) did something that brings us back to the OP's @christie003d's question! Barf. A cat barfed during the night, raising what seems to have become our biggest vomit issue: disposal diving! There was something in the vomitus; I'm pretty sure the offending item was an asparagus tip. Ireland loves walking around on the counters and digging in the disposal and screen over the sink drain... which we sometimes forget to clean out before retiring for the night. Oopsie!

Back to Tiki's Gourmet Carnivore, do you feed beef? The cats especially love Tiki's beef liver and chicken, and beef and liver; those foods have some large pieces of meat, which is great for slowing them down to actually chew. I also prefer feeding chunks and shreds that are direct from the meat, not re-formed with gums and the like. They like the (shredded) chicken/duck and chicken/turkey, too, but the beef is tops.

You really do think I'm obsessed, don't you!? Thanks for sharing!

I hadn't seen that but of course I watched -- what a great graphic example of the differences! Our previous cat was the like the dry/canned-fed cat in the video and Ireland and Edwina, even with about 35-40% (a guess) canned in their diet, are definitely like the video's raw-fed cat. Their canned foods are such pure meat--no vegetable or grain fillers at all--that they're excellent poopers.
That's interesting, maybe I will pick up a can of Nutro's shredded turkey, see how the cats like it. I'm not 100% sure if the gums affect them or not, I see from Nutro's site that xanthan gum is way down at the bottom of the list. I do know they had a problem with Mauri cat food and there were three gums pretty high up on the ingredient list. Very funny tummy issues with that food. I do like that there aren't any veggies in the Nutro. I have tried beef on occasion (it's a meat high in histamine so I tend to avoid it among other reasons), however, the cats don't care for beef anyway. I did try TC's beef and it was a definite miss.  I just wish Weruve and TC made something other than chicken in their combo foods.  I know they make lamb but I don't feed lamb (it's a "hot" meat and I'm sticking with cool, neutral and one warming meat which is turkey).

No I don't think you are obsessed, lol, but if you are, I'm right there beside you obsessed as well. I just thought it was interesting. She (Margaret Gates) has some great videos, it was on this site that I actually learned of her interview with Jackson Galaxy.  I've been feeding NV rabbit canned but I really don't notice many peas and the ones I find I pick them out since they are whole. You are right that there aren't many flavors of FD to choose from. The cats still do love when I open a pop top of canned. We'll see; I just want to make sure they get varied proteins, maybe I'll supplement with whole prey mice but seeing them in my freezer next to my fav pint of Ben & Jerry's might be an issue .... ;D

Our cats highly recommend the Nutro and the cat guy at Petco (he was a vet tech) said Nutro is appealing to most cats. Maybe it's that spurious natural flavoring!

Feeding whole mice is definitely beyond me. My college-era cat tracked and caught one mouse each spring and I watched her swallow one: that memory has stuck with me through the decades!

Thanks for all the info. The main problem I have with picking a food is finding one that is sold at our petsmart or petco. All the research I've done to find the best food and I can never find it at our stores. They had nutro but it was marked down because they were discounting the sale of it because it didn't sell.

It's so strange about Nutro: they told me at our local Petco, when I used to buy it there, that they'd discontinued the sliced turkey because it didn't sell. But then it came back. There's another thread (here) with discussion of a Nutro labeling change... and sales. Our Petco has some Nature's Variety Instinct but they're super-expensive there. We don't have Petsmart close by so I'm not sure what they sell.

They both have the natures variety instinct. I just found out about this brand in past couple of weeks. I'm planning on giving it a try.

You may want to try also Petco's Soulistic brand, it is made by Weruva (a company I trust). It's shredded meat although it contains tapioca starch, but that may not bother all cats.  The only other concern would be it's a bit low calorie, you may have to feed more than normal. I'm sure others on this site may have info about Soulistic. A few of their formulas contain carrageenan so you would want to avoid those and others that are fish based.  Soulistic's Chicken & Pumpkin and Chicken Dinner (Good Karma) are carrageenan-free. Maybe you could include that as part of a rotation with NV. Soulistic has a lower price point than NV.

That's right, I totally forgot Soulistic at Petco! Our cats love their chicken and pumpkin foods (canned and pouch) as well as the Good Karma in the pouch. I don't give them much of the sauce because of the carby tapioca, but they lap them up anyway. I use it as a treat food. (And when one cat had the runs, it cleared up with a pouch of chicken/pumpkin food. With all the sauce! I don't know if that was a coincidence or not but I always make sure to have this or the Weruva equivalent on hand.)

Our cats never really took to Nature's Variety Instinct: it seems like a love-it-or-hate-it food. They seemed to like the chicken and duck the best and ate the turkey, too, but they never loved it. And then quickly got totally bored with it! Some Cat Site members seem to think their cats like Nature's Variety's Pride line better, especially the rabbit. I tried the chicken foods out on our cats and they liked them better than Instinct... though not as much as some other foods. Cats!

I guess I'm lucky, after rereading some of these post I realized my cats aren't too picky. There are some flavor a they gobble down more quickly then others but they have never not ate a food I've tried. The only thing they have ever been picky about are cat treats. This is my first time to ever own a cat (and now I have two!) so I'm learning a lot and learning how different they are then dogs! My kitties are just one year and the other is 8 months

Yes, you're lucky, particularly because they're young and need lots of food! I hope your shopping trip goes well -- do let us know what you buy and how things go!

Without giving a deep dish place the cat food on a wide flat surface. This spreads out so that it takes more time for eating.

I suggest to see your vet immediately. It's always good to consult a vet before changing cat foods,as it may the reason.

I would not feed anymore dry.  There are just too many unneeded carbs in most of it.  Evo dry has the most protein but a lot of fat.  I just love the catinfo site.  You can look at most canned foods & see the % of carbs, protein & fat.  Tiki cat is probably the best but here I can only find fish & feeding too much of this made my last cat sick.  I know that canned is expensive & pet store canned is not that good but after dealing with IBD I would not feed anything but decent quality wet from now on.

We had the same problem with one of our cat's vomiting and getting congested. Lots of medical tests and trial and error tests turned up that our cat is allergic to chicken (chicken, chicken meal, chicken fat, chicken by-products.... in other words... ANYTHING and EVERYTHING to do with chicken). We FINALLY found a dry cat food with absolutely NO chicken of any sorts in it... She does very well now. It is "Blue Buffalo Basics, Grain-free Indoor Adult Fish & Potato". This specific recipe is the ONLY Blue Buffalo brand that has absolutely no chicken. Hope this helps everyone.

I feed my cats the Blue Basics too, but the duck one. It seems to work well for them.
