My cat of five years has got a slight cold.I have been to the Vet and they gave me Metacam and that didn't help.I went back again and they put her on amoxillin for a week.I haven't seen any difference so I went on the internet and found out that Lysine, Vitamin C and I also have started giving her Krill oil to find out if it will clear the cold.Does anyone know anything that will clear it up.They also said that she might be stressed because we also have a Pet grooming place near me with dogs barking at times.I haven't been letting her out too much because of the cold as well. She is eating and playing well but she has it looks like lost weight but she was weighed and the Vet said her weight was ok.She hates going to the Vet so I try not too get her stressed by this too much.Has anyone got any good ideas to clear her cold.My cat is a tortie . Any suggestions would be much appreciated.I started her today on a capsule of Krill oil in her food and she loved it and went back three times to finish her food.I mixed it with Mackerel which helped and rice a ca t food called Encore.

If your cat has been prescribed antibiotics by the vet and no improvement I suggest calling your vet to ask what they would recommend next.  If your cat has a bacterial infection then the antibiotics would treat the infection, something that the nutritional supplements do not do.  Different infections respond to different types of antibiotics and it may be that your cat has not been on the right one or for long enough to get rid of the infection.  If there isn't a bacterial infection I am unsure why the vet would prescribe this type of medication.

Some supplements can place other stresses on the body when they are processed, like L Lysine, so unless your cat has something which they are known to help it might not be the best thing to give these.  If you do use them with your cat it is also worth telling your vet and checking there are no health issues which might be made worse by any of them.

L Lysine is often given to cats who have feline herpes virus to help them suppress the virus and shorten any outbreaks they have.  Many find giving L Lysine to a cat who has FHV can help but it also puts more strain on the cat's body as it affects how they process proteins.  What it does not do is help treat any bacterial infection your cat has.   I do sometimes give it to my cat who has the virus but only when he is unwell because my vet has said it might cause other problems if given long term and I want to minimize the chances of that.

I think you are right to consider stress levels as this is never helpful for good health or for getting back to health, either for cats of humans.  Feeding the best nutritional food you can afford and source where you live, keeping her as stress free as you can, and checking with the vet if they think there is a bacterial infection present which still needs treatment to help your cat get on top of it are the best things you can do.  I don't know much about the krill oil so am interested in what others have to say about this.

Yes, Metacam IS for pain!  Why would they give her that?  Are you certain that it's a cold?  Perhaps it's allergies and that's why she's still got symptoms.  Oh perhaps it's Feline Herpes, in which case the L-Lysine would be a very good thing to give her.  So glad she likes the Krill Oil.  One of mine likes it, but the other two hate it .  Krill Oil is good for many things, but, honestly, I've never heard of it helping with a cold.

You do need to talk again to your vet. Metacam is for pain and inflammation, but it has been associated with kidney failure in cats and is not longer on the approved list of FDA drugs for felines. So I would question that. This winter, when I had two cats with colds, it took a number of tries with different antibiotics, but eventually doxycycline did the trick, a combination of tablets and eye ointment. Bu8t that won't work if the cat has herpes. I am afraid you will have to go back to the vet, armed with a little more knowledge, and see what else they can do.

My cat was given Metacam the first visit and the second visit she was give Amoxicillin and also had an injection. She also had frontline given to her and other pills .She had first of all flecks of blood in the bath which they said was stress so they gave her Metacam for a week. They said her weight was fine but she looks thin around her back .There is a Pet grooming place near me that has come so I don't let her out now too much . I haven't let her out also because it has been quite cold in London . The Vet said her weight was ok but she does look thin around her back and I am not sure why .I have tried Lysine Vitamin C which I am still giving her 250mg twice a day and also Krill Oil which she loves but the shuffle is still there she doesn't have runny eyes and she only occasionally sneezes but I think it's the scratching of the carpet that makes her sneeze . My cat is eating and sleeping and also playing well she is five years old and a Tortie.

OK, so it actually sounds like she had a UTI?  Blood in her urine?  That would explain the metacam.

If you think the sneezing is from her scratching on the carpet, perhaps you could buy her one of those cardboard scratchers, or a cat tree that has sisal posts.  Cats do like to scratch both vertically AND horizontally though, so the cardboard scratcher that lays on the floor might be good for her.  If she is going to be  "homebound" from now on though, she could get great benefits from cat tree as well, if she doesn't already have one..

I bought her a vertical seagrass scratch post with a feather on it and she never looked at it . She seems to be more involved with boxes and scratching the cardboard and tearing it . I think I need to replace my carpet as I think it might be affecting her . She seems to scratch it a lot on the top landing . My cat is an outdoor cat so I want to let her go and play outside as much as possible but I check the weather cos it is sometimes very frosty still . I might try going back to the Vet but the problem is they have two Vets in one room and they deal with cats and dogs in the same room which I couldn't believe .

Are you thinking the cold symtoms are related to your carpet in some way, like an allergy?  Is there a reason you think the carpet affects her?  Did you ask the vet about this?

Are you in London UK?  If you are in a large city and not happy with the vet you have been to can you go to another one near by?

you can take your cat to a cat-only vet.
