I tried to have my cat try some new canned food. Merrick chicken pate. Just gave it. He ate some but it seems the past few night/early mornings 5am or so he'' starts vomiting but only clear liquid.  he then seems fine and friendly but not eating like he use to not that that was so great either. fancy feast is not as it use to be. cats are smart they know.. today brought him some fresh ground turkey and cooked it and some baby food,       he ate a little of that and some distilled water,  could the new food have made him sick.?or perhaps a stuck hairball but do give him hairball stuff the natural by tomlyn ..  i need to find a really good canned cat food that all my cats like have tried almost everything..      perhaps weruvia again.   i just do not know....   my cat is only 2 years old so hope its nothing serious,    he purrs and loves to sleep with me.  could      a new can not presented slowly cause this?

So just to clarify, your kitty vomited during the night and early morning? How many times did he vomit? Did you see him vomit? The vomiting seems unrelated to the food, in my opinion. Usually food related vomit is solid and happens right after they eat.

It might be a hairball about to come out. It might be something more serious like a fluid in the lungs. How is his breathing?

If he's not eating, then I would personally take him to the vet now. You know something's not quite right when a cat isn't eating normally.

is he drinking more water? could the clear liquid be from drinking too much water?

Sometimes cats will throw up clear bile when they are really hungry, their stomach gets upset.  I would consider feeding him a meal before bed to see if that helps, and as for type of food, the best food for a cat is the food he will eat, then secondly you can look at quality.  If he's eating less because he doesn't like the brand, this would help to explain his hunger and the vomiting.

Ruby used to vomit clear liquid several times a week when I first adopted her.  It was always when she was hungry - early morning or late afternoon.  The vet suggested a hypo-allergenic canned food and the clear vomiting went away pretty much immediately.

I'm still buying the best or trying to would love to get them off FF which they barely eat have 3 cats. He ate some  of the beef wilderness even cooked fresh ground turkey which he did not eat and always loved it. Will try a bit of tuna Though would never give all the time. Who makes hypoallergenic cat food? Its the ingredients in most cat foods that are so bad.

Longs he eats a little I'll see- he hates going to the vet as do I. They can be so clueless and expensive and tell you nothing. I live for my cats so I am keeping a close eye.

Sorry to hear your kitty is still not himself.

When I adopted Ruby I continued to feed her the same food she'd been getting at the shelter - a mix of  IAMS dry and canned, but she had the clear vomiting issue right from the start, plus she had loose stools.  Eventually one morning I woke to find she'd been sick several times overnight.  I took her to the vet that morning and he suggested trying Royal Canin hypo-allergenic canned food.  As it is a veterinary food, it is not cheap, but since it cleared up her vomiting and diarrhea, I've kept her on it.

Can you @batrice help clear up something for us?  Which is the bigger or real concern for you right now, the vomiting or the lack of appetite, or something else?

From where I'm sitting i see a cat who doesn't seem to like his food, this is causing him to eat less, possibly causing the vomiting, and may be slowly creating a medical condition that wouldn't exist if he would eat a normal amount of food.

The first rule with cat nutrition and transitioning to higher quality food imo is 1) get them to eat something that they like 2) then slowly over the course of at least a week start a gentle transition to a higher quality food that they will accept, or will accept over time and 3) be mindful that quality food for a cat isn't always what corporations market to people.  There seems to be a trend in connecting what people think is good food for people with what is good for an animal.  The perfect food for cats are mice.  And everything inside the mouse including the "by products" and the partially digested carbs inside the mouse's stomach.

Royal Canin has an over-the-counter food that might meet your needs:

Hi @detmut. Not sure if your suggestion was to me or the original poster, but the Royal Canin food Ruby eats is a novelty protein - duck only. And as it agrees so well with her tummy, I'm hesitant to try anything else.  Thanks for finding and posting the link though.
yes, it was for you but i didn't realize the novelty protein aspect. my cat had an intestinal infection and both prescription and non-prescription Royal Canin foods helped in her recovery.

Well I went to  a store that carries GOOD food. Bought a bunch of little cans with excellent ingredients. Just wish they would just eat it without a slow transition. If they do not eat the FF anymore its hard to make a slow transition!! He seems much better as he's eating some Merrick dry which is better than nothing. Then tried some weruvia. Going to get the new wholesome food dry which has less not so good ingredients than the other. not a big dry food fan but just till i get him through all of this and come up with a food they all like. have had many cats my whole life and i cannot believe  i went from very good food to ff, thats because they would not eat it.   will try duck seems there is more of that out there.  its just recently they started not eating much of the ff. but do have the california natural dry which was great  for years and years ago despite recalls i still went back but now they do not like that.  they are inside cats only so its not like they have huge appetites from running around outside.  i'll keep at this and will keep you posted.  also changed to distilled water.   i have hard water just to see if it helps

hi, for me personally, i've found a/d critical care canned cat food (for pup n cats) to help w/those upset tummy situations.  Aside from a vet check up... Not drinking enough good water, don't know your water source, BUT giving kitty some BRITA filtered water and making sure the dish is cleaned after each meal...  NOT all cats are created equal, and well not saying you don't do this.  BUT a lot of my friends don't bother ever cleaning the water or food dishes.  I know I would like a clean plate and not some gritty slimmy dish form early in the day let alone last month...  ACID .. microbials... not getting to techy BUT ...

-

a/d can be bought at your local vet store and is nice to have on hand... it can be syringed which is nice and it helps nurse a kitty or pup as well is easy on their organs... DRY food well thats touch and go... I personally mix and iams brand with a purina indoor brand and my cats love it...

-

Brushing kitty helps to, thats another type of massage... I try not to forget... Dogs have owners... CATS have servants..lol;)

have a great day...

Well he seems better. He likes the lamb pate by merrick still trying to switch from FF chunky chicken (which varies in quality so much depending on dates!!!!) I think distilled water has helped as well. Problem I feel is getting them to switch even if you mix a little with the old food. One type for all would be great. My moms cats I tried the new merrick canned and they devoured it. So hopefully they all will feel the same way.
