Hi all, this is my first post. We just adopted an adult cat a few weeks ago, and she has a few funny quirks.

One that just started a few days ago is this little sneeze attack that only happens in the evening. She sneezes about 3-5 times, sometimes more or less, then seems a bit dazed with slightly laboured breathing (like anyone after a bunch of sneezes in a row), then maybe a little cough and then back to normal. It's a fairly dusty apartment (lots of construction around) so I don't think the sneezing is a sign of illness or anything, I'm just puzzled as to why this little fit would happen at around the same time each day. The only change that coincides with this is a change to wood pellet litter, but if it's that, then why does it only happen at this particular time of day, and not when she is actually using the litter box?

I work from home, so I can confirm that she doesn't do this at all any other time of day, and has no other symptoms of respiratory problems. No eye/nose discharges, etc.

Any theories?

This is just a wild guess, but perhaps there are some night blooming plants outside or something like that?  Or does it coincide with someone coming HOME around that time?  Perhaps they are bringing in something that bothers your new cat...a smell or disagrees with his nose.  OR, maybe he's rummaging around at that time looking for something (food maybe) and sniffs up some of that dust you mentioned
.  Maybe you have a resident mouse that appears at the same time everyday and he's chasing it down and stirs up some dust.  It's really hard to say, but from what you are describing, it really does sound like he's sniffed up some dust or smething when he does it, particularly since it's followed by a cough.  That's what I do when I'm working in a dusty environment.

Usually sneezing isn't a big deal as long as your cat isn't expelling coloured or non-coloured discharge (snot, etc.). I'd say what mrsgreenjeens mrsgreenjeens thinks is a good guess.

Although, the coughing is something I'd be a little concered about. Cat's don't typically cough but it really depends on the way your kitty is coughing. Head low and neck out is not a good sign.

Also, it's allergy season so that could contribute to the sneezing.

You mentioned you just adopted your cat a few weeks ago. I think a check up would be a good thing to do if you haven't already. But anyway, welcome to TCS and I hope you enjoy your new kitty (and her sneezing stops)!
