I was caring for a 4 month old feral kitten from the shelter I volunteer for and after 4 months she was doing good, sitting on my lap, loving her indoor life and my 3 other cats, but would scamper away when approached, she somehow got out (8 days now) I know she's close as I've seen her on my porch eating food I put out but scampers off when she saw me, I managed to trap her last night, BUT when I picked up the trap she freaked and managed to get out the the other side and ran of..I am heartbroken wondering is she hurt, will she come back to eat, should I try to trap her again maybe in a few days Please let me know as I am worried sick

Start feeding in the trap (tie it open so it doesn't spring).  After a few days, she will go in without hesitating and you can then set it.  Make sure it is secure, though, even if you have to tie it shut before you lift it again.

You are doing the right thing - she's frightened but is still sticking around, so she much feel some measure of safety.

Exactly as @Ondine  said, prop the trap door open and ONLY leave food inside it.

Once she is going in to it again, set the trap. Don't let her see or hear you watching either. This is a good deterrent for her not going in to it.

Thanks for the advice! I was so bummed all day yesterday and was praying she'd come back after her ordeal. She did! I put out fresh tuna, her favorite . Blue Salmon I put a baby monitor up so I could watch (a few nights ago as I know she'll scamper off if she sees me) I covered my trap completely so see won't freak but plan on using it open w/o tripping it for a week or so within 3-4 days..just happy, relieved she did come back  I just hoped she not to afraid to be back home again as I have a huge game room approx. 15 ft. behind my house which only she will be staying with classical music and with all the birds chirping she can do as she pleases just hope I can safely re-trap her my big mistake was not checking the latch but didn't want to catch the skunks that also visit to eat and needed to release one quickly&quietly  with freaking them out!

Finally got her back Thurs night after 4 weeks of trying to trap her and now all she does is cry looking out the window, clawing at the door as if she wants to get OUT! Hopefully she will not escape again but if she does I'll just let her go as I can't go through this again,I'll put food out hoping the skunks.racoons don't come back as I haven't food out since, she in my game room where it's warm, clean, and plenty of food and water, with plenty of places she can look out and I spend 2 hours several times a day she sits on my lap for 20 minutes then looks out the window crying..but at least she's safe and sound for now

Hopefully you can put up with the whining....I do know (from personal experience) it's tough to get through. But forge through if possible!
