This is so extremely frustrating.

On March 13th, we adopted a gorgeous, very big and fit 11 month old black cat who we named Pi.

Within 48 hours, we were at the emergency vet because Pi had sneezed up some yellow stuff and sounded stuffy. We couldn't tell too much from his behavior how he was feeling otherwise as he was new to us, but the vet found he had a fever and put him on antibiotics.

Two days later, we were back at the emergency vet. The cat was still having sneezing fits, and now loud coughing fits, he had thrown up and we had to place his food bowl in front of him where ever he was resting and entice him to get him to eat anything. His temp was the same at this second visit, so he was given IV fluids and a shot to reduce his fever. The vet told us she felt it was viral and took him off the antibiotics because of the stomach upset. After this, he began eating well for the first time since he came home and started to get a bit better.

A few days later, he was still sneezing and occasionally coughing lightly but had seemed to be on the upswing until….one of his eyes became infected.

We brought him to a non-emergency vet on April 1st and she put him on lungworm meds and gave us eye ointment. The eye is now a lot better, the cat eating great, has bouts of crazy playful energy at times, is sneezing less, no loud coughing, just has some noisy, mainly nose breathing issues intermittently. The vet's been in constant contact (as in daily contact even on her days off) and had us take his fever last night for reference. We did and he didn't have a fever for the first time since it's been taken after him coming home with us (the shelter didn't take his temp or do a checkup of any kind before sending him home with us.). So, everything was looking up….but then today after I fed him his lungworm medicine, he sneezed out some yellow mucus.

The vet wants to wait and see and if it happens again or turns green or has blood in it, at which point, we will have to start him on antibiotics and try for one that doesn't upset his stomach.

This has just been so hard. I really just want the cat to stop getting sick and feel normal. I'm wondering is this normal? The vet who's been emailing, calling, etc has been so amazing and helpful. I can't say enough good things about her. Originally, she mentioned that we needed to know that while she felt it was just a virus, it might also be FIP, but now, that isn't suspected any more. Do cats from shelters normally battle such complex health issues? I feel like he is strong enough to get better because in general he is moving in a good direction, but I just don't know if these sort of issues coming and going are to be expected or not. I researched before adopting, so I know cats often come home with colds and I have had cats before, but I didn't come across stories like this and haven't had cats with this sort of trouble in the past.

Thank you! Yes, I forgot to add that we have him on lysine treats per the vets recommendation. :) Glad to hear that this isn't an abnormal experience. Thank you for your reply.

Also if you have a humidifier that will help or you can run a hot shower and place him in the bathroom, the stream from the hot water will help clear his nose

Yes, in general, as far as how he is acting, he appears to feel better as he eats very well and is a lot more curious, energetic and playful. It's just these set backs we've been having like the eye infection and now the repeat performance of the yellow sneeze even though his fever has resolved. We're giving him "GNC Ulta Mega Lysine" treats.

She didn't run tests. She noticed that the shelter hadn't dewormed him for lungworm, so she said that maybe this could be compromising his immunity and she felt it was a good idea for us to treat for them anyway all things considered.

I'm not going to say "normal" but definitely, when you adopt, you risk not knowing the history of the cat especially if they're older. Also, there are tons of diseases in shelters alone so when you do go visit shelters, it's so important to wash your hands between rooms and animals.

I hope your kitty feels better! I'm sorry both of you have to go through this but it's so amazing that your vet is so responsive and helpful!

Thank you mingking! Yes, the vet is amazing. I'm so happy we found her. According to the shelter we got him from, the cat was presumed to be a stray that was brought in to a different shelter after birth where he spent his first ten months and then was moved to the shelter we adopted him from a month before we adopted him. So, we are missing his medical records for most of his life. I am just hoping that he will pull through well and soon.
