I started this post yesterday but didn't finish till today.Sorry it's long and rambling.I've been feeding a colony for a few years now and the homeowner was really good about it. the elderly home owner used to feed them but unfortunately she had health and work troubles so we took over the daily feedings/occasional vet visits/spay&neutering and all. We were able to find homes for seven of them but new cats would always show up and also I think people would dump cats there too. The home has been foreclosed and very sad to say the lady tried to move as much of her stuff as possible but yesterday and today the bank( i guess) showed up and removed what all else was there. She lost a lot of her belongings. Anyway, that's the backstory. We still have 4 cats out there(originally was 17) and earlier I was going to go by there and see what was going on and also I have been trying to get them used to moving over across the street in a bamboo area until I can find them homes. Well today when i got there(on a very short work break ugh) a big yard and clean up crew was there tearing stuff up and removing the rest of her belongings. One of there workman went up to me an said HEY THERE"S SOME KITTIES BACK HERE(this as i was talking to another one about the cats there) and he showed me four tiny tiny tiny babies alive and lying in the dirt! It appears the previous crew took them out of whatever box the momma had them in. The yardman said more crew was coming with some riding mowers and may not see them but he didn't know where to put them. Of course I flew into a panic and had to walk the 6 blocks home super fast to get a box(didn't know from where!) and also a carrier to hope I can catch the mom. The yardman promised he would watch over the little babies until I got back. So off I went then back, took the babies, then back again with carrier! Toss in a sandal peeling my ankle, me being fat, plantar fasciitis and meds for a procedure today and you can see what fun ensued on my lunch break. Whew! and thats how i ended up with kittens in the kitchen. I will post a pic later and maybe someone can tell me how old they are. The eyes are still closed. I'm concerned about the mom nursing them enough, how would I know this?Later after work we got them situated and bought a big plastic drawer, lined it with new fluffy towels and the little family seems to like it. I also have a possible foster home for them in progress(fingers crossed as I have a tiny apartment and one pawed houseguest we rescued last year AND my own 3!

Wait, I dont understand.  IS the mom with them, and seems to nurse them, or is she not, and you must do everything yourself??

Yes she's with them but I don't know how to tell if everyone is eating enough. Sorry, I've never dealt with kittens. One seems a bit smaller than the rest. Not way way smaller but a little bit

You can use a scale like a electronic kitchen scale or any scale that can weigh in grams

As said above, the easiest to be sure is to weight them every day.  Mom usually do allows it, also a semiferal mom, if you are careful and respectful...

I will wirte more about it when its time.

They shall gain minimum 6plus  if smallish, 10plush if more average grammes.

Otherwise, you get some idea by looking ana feeling in your hand...  At least, experienced with kittens can often do that.

I do agree with you, you must look and follow closely the smallest one.  Later on, when you know their weight additions, you will know better which to look up with.

I

I understand they all suckle.  Do they seem contend?  Or are they uneasy, shrieking, searching?

If they seems contend they are almost surely contend too...  And thus, they get what thay shall.   (there is ONE exception from this rule, weak kittens whom dont get enough, may be so weak he just lays down and sleeps, and its of course beginning to dying, unless a vigilant caretaker steps in and vigorously take charge).

ps.    Is the mom handleable or is she shy semiferale?   She may even be defensive aggressive??

The mom rubs up against my legs and lets me pet her once or twice then moves away. She's been ok with me handling the kittens. They seem pretty content but i did hear them shriek twice and it was because she was getting in the box with them and trying to get everyone together. I hope to get a scale today or tomorrow. Today have to go back to that vacant house, feed whoever is hanging around and try and catch two of the regulars to take to the vet. But I will find a scale no later than tomorrow and I will keep checking on the babies in my kitchen, the momma seems to be getting more comfortable in there. Three of my four cats seemed to go on high alert when the babies shrieked. They sat in front of the kitchen door with their eyes open WIDE

First I have to say you are am amazing person.

I agree with the other post about them crying and their wt.

As for age most kittens open their eyes around 10 days. That being said everyone is different. I have a litter right now that all 3 opened their eyes on days 3-4. I have also seen them take a whole 2 weeks. So the only thing I can tell you is they are younger than 2 weeks. Please watch for eye infections. They are common in kittens born outside. if you see any puss wipe with warm water on a towel a few times a day..

Thank you for caring for this family.

thank you :) we do what we can. The scale arrives tomorrow. All is good so far with the babies& momma. Thank goodness I have them here and they didn't stay outside of the abandoned house, we had a pretty bad storm last night and again this morning and more heavy rain is expected later today. We were unable to catch the sick senior kitty that is still out there but we will continue to try again later today when I am feeling better. If I still feel ill then my girlfriend is going to go to and catch him. We check on the kitchen kitties every few hours. We are now feeding the momma cat the same food our guys eat(Best Feline Friend and other Weruva stuff), she is loving the food. Oh and we also noticed she is now spending more time cuddling with her babies and not jumping out of the box so much.

Im really happy things seems to go well, and mom is more and more at ease, I saw also  your next post.   Well done!

I have noticed many friendly, but shy cats  arent very happy with being  petted standing on the floor.  Its easier if they are laying comfortably on a sofa or a chair....  This as a tip for the time when you are going to give her a full and formal socialization, so she can be adopted out to a good home she too.   Because it sounds as she is a good candidate for fostering.   I wouldnt think twice,  if there is a chance to find her a home.

Anyways, for the moment it goes excellently.  It can hardly go much better with a semiferal.   I mean,  semiferales mom are like human moms.  Taken inside with their kittens, as soon as they land and cool down, and recognize nobody is mean to them, and this is probably the best practical chance for her children, she does copy with the situation.   The welfare of her children is more important than "freedom".

So sometimes taking care of a semiferale mom with kittens is easier than taking care of her alone.   As long as you are friendly and respectful that is.   :)

But I think she is above average.  That is why I say she is a given candidate for fostering,

and not just spay, let her recuperate, and let her out again.
