Hello,

Our 3 year old rescue cat Goobbee had his annual vaccinations last week. He received the FVCRP injection. As soon as he got home he was lethargic and his condition over the past 5 days has deteriorated. He has vomited and will not eat his food. Before the vaccination he was a very energetic cat with a healthy appetite.

I read that cats should only get the FVCRP vaccine one time in their lives ( plus a booster ) because of the danger of getting kidney disease from over vaccination with FVCRP. This was Goobbee's THIRD injection in 3 years with this vaccine. We are so worried that his kidneys have been damaged. We are taking him to his vet in the morning.

Does anyone have any experience with this vaccine? We are so sick and worried that we hurt our beautiful little boy.

Thank you.

while it's true that vaccine is recommended no more often than every 3 years, the most common side effects includes vomiting and lethargy for a couple of days, not kidney damage.

Thank you very much for your reply. Here is a link to an article of a few years ago that cites a study at Colorado State University which indicates that multiple FVCRP injections can lead to renal failure. I am not an expert in  this area so I don't know how to make a judgement but I pray you are correct. Thank you again for responding and if you have a comment on this article please let me know. The information about the CSU study is about half way down. Thanks again.

I think this is probably some kind of allergic reaction.  My kitty reacted to his one year boosters and he was vomiting..  Have you called the vet?

The issue with CRF is a cumulative thing over a longer period of time.  That is why it is still a theory about the vaccine causing it because kitties risk of developing it also increases with age.

I know the thing about one time only is out there but there are people with an anti-vaccine agenda for pets and people.  That is why we are having things like outbreaks of measles among people

Thank you Denice and detmut very kindly for answering my post. I am very worried because my Goobbee is exhibiting similar symptoms to my beloved dog who passed away recently from renal failure. I came across an article that refers to a Colorado State University study in 2004 that links kidney disease to overuse of the FVRCP vaccine so I naturally assumed the worst. I tried to post the link here but was told I do not have permissions to post links. I am taking Goobbee to the vet in the morning. He is just a shadow of himself. He was so healthy and vital before the vaccines 5 days ago - it is heartbreaking. Thanks again for your help.

Goobbee is fighting for his life tonight - please pray for him. He is  in renal failure. Last week he was a healthy vibrant 3 year old cat before his vaccinations and the next day he stopped eating and drinking. He has lost 15% weight in 6 days. He never had a sick day in his life. Clearly giving him this vaccine 3 times in 3 years was too much for his kdneys.
