Hello everyone, newbie here.  I wanted to ask a question or an opinion, on which wet to start my (2) 10 year old cats on.  Chaplin is a neutered black and white and Xena is a spayed tuxedo, and both are just "household" cats and not breed-specific.  Both were adopted when they were kittens, and raised on a variety of cat foods.  Now older and a bit on the hefty side, I need to get their weight under control.  I did have a vet put them on Science Diet prescription food, but I just couldn't afford it anymore, and after some research, Science Diet isn't the best to feed them.  I started feeding them Blue Buffalo Weight Control Chicken & Brown Rice dry, with some of TOTW Canyon River mixed in.  I heard several years ago, that wet food was a big problem when it came to tarter build-up and dental problems.  So, my babies have been on dry for years.  They have not had any health problems that I can see; no peeing problems for Chaplin or bloody, runny stools from either one.  They both drink water everyday, as I have a Drinkwell system that they really like.  They are not losing any weight; I do controlled feedings of the dry daily and very few treats (maybe once a week).  After doing research today for about 2 hours online, I now see that the wet will help in weight loss and I should slow down on the dry..  I want to get some small cans of wet to try out and see what they would like the best.  Neither one has ever been a finicky eater, so that isn't a concern.

My concern is a good, quality wet food.  I have access to a Petco and a Walmart, about 20 miles from town.  We do have a small pet store here in town, but choices are limited.  I have had people recommend Natural Balance, TOTW, and others.  I was just curious as to what some of you have had positive results with.  I understand that every cat will react differently..  I just wanted suggestions beyond Fancy Feast and Friskies from the local supermarket.  They enjoy the Blue Buffalo dry and TOTW dry, but as I have read in other threads, are still hungry and cry for more food.  I have actually caught Xena eating the dog's TOTW dry food.  I think she's eating it because she's still hungry, but did notice that someone puked in the bedroom yesterday, and it was dark brown..  It's the color of the dog's dry food.  I know that dog food and cat food is different and believe it was Xena, and that too much of the dog's dry isn't agreeing with her.  Obviously I don't want her to eat Mona's dog food.

I am headed "down the hill" tomorrow to go to Costco and will stop by Petco, or possibly a local Petsmart in Palm Springs...  I wanted to start with some food for them tomorrow so any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated...

I like Nature's Variety, both the Instinct (pate) and Pride (chunky) lines. My cats don't particularly care for Merrick, but that would be worth a try too as it comes in both pâté and chunks.

For wet, my cat isn't picky either. I personally like the ingredients in: Weruva, Wellness, Nature's variety Instinct and Pride. I also include the odd can of Halo and Nutro occasionally.

All are grain free, but be careful, just because a can says grain free, doesn't mean it isn't full of carbs! For weight loss, look for high protein to keep them full, longer!

They're going to cry/beg for food if you're starting to restrict their meals. When I changed my cat from free feeding to timed meals, she begged and cried for food all the time! Once she learned the new routine, she calmed down.

Would it be possible to put your dog on timed feedings/meals as well? This way, there isn't any food left out for the cats to sneak and eat when no one is looking! :lol3:

As for dry, I only use it as a small snack, so a few bits at a time, but Nora loves Acana, which is the "sister" food to Orijen.
