My most recent foster cat, Meadow, gave birth to her litter starting just before midnight last night. The first four kittens were born without any assistance needed from me, aside from trimming down some excessively long umbilical cords. The last kitten, sadly, was stillborn. I know he had been alive because I had felt him kicking probably an hour before he was delivered. Before he arrived Meadow had been having contractions for about 10 minutes, then a sac started to emerge, just a bubble, and Meadow immediately started licking it, so it burst open and clear fluid came out. The kitten didn't arrive until about 15 minutes later. When he came out his nose was already blue. I cleared his airways and did cpr on him for at least 20 minutes, but nothing. I suspect he had been stuck in the birth canal too long and either suffocated or drowned. This is the third pregnant cat I have fostered and I know was inevitable at some point there would be one that didn't make it, but it's disheartening nonetheless. Can any of you experts weigh in on what may have happened?
