Hey strangers hopefully soon to be friends,
Adopted a new 1 year old kitty about a month ago. No problems whatsoever. She's had her shots, adopted her from the shelter so she was certified worm free as well. Easiest cat I've ever adopted. Poop was totally normal up to 3 days ago when I saw it was loose. She still eats plays and drinks despite it. Any ideas or advice would be great. Thank you!

What the stools look like? What color? Is there blood

I think you should talk to a vet, no change for 3 days would make me worry

Greetings from France,

For what it is worth, my longhair cat sometimes (maybe twice or three times a year) will have a soft stool and my vet has told me that it may be that she just have ingested a bit more hair which has not formed a hairball.  She continues to eat normally during these periods which usually last less than a week and I have not observed any changes in behaviour.

Bonjour!

Can you tell us what she is eating?

Wet and dry?

Has there been a change to her diet?

Does she go outside?

Thank you Loire! That does help my mind a bit.
Stephen it looks like you're talking to Loire but I thought I'd answer those questions anyway just in case.
She eats wellness dry chicken. She has since we got her and there were literally zero issues up to 3 days ago. She does not go outside.
Still no other symptoms. She just ran around the apartment like she was seeing ghosts and keeps attacking her toys. Pinched her skin and she doesn't seem dehydrated either. Hoping for the best... Everything I've read has said if it's over 3 days talk to a vet I just wondered if anyone has ever had this happen every now and then and it was resolved without vet care.

Yes I meant to reply to you sorry and thanks for the answers.  In some cases its a transient type of issue and it will resolve on its own, perhaps the cat ate something and it just needs a little time to resolve.  It could also be a parasite that was incompletely resolved at the shelter and has returned (usually coccidia or giardia) but if it doesn't resolve soon, then i would bring  stool sample to a vet.  By far the best testing that can now be done is offsite PCR testing that is basically definitive.

Since her diet hasn't changed we can't blame that, but having come from a shelter in the past month does raise some issues.  In the long run you may want to consider adding wet food to her diet, there are lots of threads about the benefits to wet food in cats in the nutrition forum - but having said that now is not the time to change her diet, and not until her stool has been stabilized.

It could be the change in food from what she was eating at the shelter, especially dry food.  That needs to be a gradual change.  Sudden changes cause loose stools.

Just a quick update!
Took her off food for a day so her stomach could take a break. She was still showing no symptoms and as soon as we put food down she gobbled it up like normal and her stool is totally back to normal. Hopefully she was just a cat and licked or ate something that was not meant to be eaten or licked. Keeping an eye out and every time I hear that litter being kicked I get tense and do an archeological dig on it to make sure it still looks okay.
Thank you so much for all the help. This site is fantastic. I'm sure I'll be back
