Okay, my brother's cat had kittens about six or seven weeks ago (she gets fixed next week), and this evening my mother gave them (momma cat and kittens) sardines. Should I be worried?

Sardines are fine occasionally. Good source of omega 3 fats. Of course you don't want to give sardines too often but now and then won't hurt.
If she wants to give them sardines again in the future, salt-free packed in water is best.
