We have a black cat that is only 11 months old and her rear right leg keeps jumping out of its socket. Took her to the vet and he diagnosed her with patella luxation where the kneecap pops out of the groove its suppose to ride in. He said it was more than likely a birth defect and would get worse as time goes. She immediately lays on her side and usually gets it back in on her own after 15-20 seconds. She is very active and I hate to quit playing with her but I'm afraid I'll make the problem worse. Would you suggest surgery at 11 months old or wait a few years? It popped out four times within an hour yesterday and one of those times was just getting out of the litter box which might be eight inches tall at the most.

"The type of surgery is based on the severity of the luxation  and can include both orthopedic and soft-tissue procedures. Useful procedures involve fascial releasing incisions (on the side of the luxation), joint capsule and retinaculum imbrications (on the side opposite theluxation), deepening of the trochlear groove, tibial crest transposition, and fabella to tibial tuberosity derotation sutures. Severe deformations may require femoral or tibial osteotomies, stifle joint arthrodesis, or limb amputation."

"Prognosis for recovery is good in mild or moderately affected animals. Concurrent cranial cruciate ligament and medial meniscal injuries should be identified and treated. Cats are less severely affected than dogs and have an excellent prognosis."
