He's been with us a short while and the litter I was given with him is some organic weird birdseed looking crap... I'm going to switch it and hopefully that will help. Anyway he does not cover his pee or poop when he goes, EVER. It smells so bad. He just goes to the bathroom and leaves. No attempt at covering it, no scratching around, just drops a bomb and leaves. I've never had a cat do this. What if he steps in it?! What can I do? He's not fixed but will be soon, I font know why that would have something to do with it but maybe.

Some cats don't bury their business. More often than not, this is seen in cats/kittens that were separated from mom too early, though it's not always the case. Doubtful neutering him will change this particular behavior. However, depending on Vader's age, neutering may help some with the odor.

Certainly worth offering him a clay type litter and see if that has an effect. If you do decide to change litter, best to offer him a new box with the new litter in addition to his current box/litter.

I've had several cats that don't cover at all, my 14 year old right now doesn't, so I know what you mean by the smell! When he goes in the same box my youngster goes in, the young one buries it! It wouldn't hurt to try another litter, he may not like the 'feel' of your current one. good luck!

Mine don't cover either. Occasionally 1 will, but the other 2 definitely don't. Northing I can do other than clean it up quickly so it doesn't stink up the whole apartment.

Mine bury some of the the time; but not all of the time.  Sometimes they scratch around in there and still don't manage to cover it.  It's like they scratch everywhere but where they need to!  Even outside the box!

Diet can play a part in how much the litter box smells too.  (In addition to the litter type you use.)  I can always tell when Noodles has gotten into Mooch's food because it stinks big time!  Any fish flavored cat foods do that to Noodles as well.

Update* I changed the brand of litter and he is digging a hole before he goes and also covers it now.

....downside. .. dog started raiding the litter box :/ we just bought this box so we can't really go out and buy a new one now. I turned it to face the wall and it stopped for a while but then started back up. She's a bigger dog... I don't know how she's getting in there now without moving it...

Hi, glad to read that your initial problem has gone away!

Sorry about your new one.

I don't know what kind of litter you are using now, but I just wanted to say (and maybe you already know this or aren't even using this type of litter, but better safe than sorry) that if it is a clumping clay litter, it could pose health issues with your dog if he is ingesting it.  Because it expands so much it can cause constipation and even some serious blockages that would require vet attention if he ingests enough at once.  So a non clumping clay would be a much safer one to use while this is going on.  Of course there are lots of litters that aren't clay that could be used as an alternative too, though I understand you are worried your can won't dig in them (slowly mixing the new litter in to kind of "trick" him may keep him digging with the new stuff if you want to try something different).

As a permanent solution, one idea is to put the box in a room where you don't mind keeping the door shut, and then installing a kitty door onto the door for that room.

Anyway, I hope you find a solution to your new problem that works for you!

Good luck!

+ Using a dog gate in a door way to keep your dog out of the kitty box room could work too.  They even make some that open kind of like a door and have hinges so that its easy for you do move through the doorway still.  And some even have little kitty doors on the bottom.

Good luck!

I have a one year old cat, half the time she covers her poop & half the time she doesn't. She knows that the poop some how disappears after she goes cause she always inspects after I go in there. She goes outside & inside so I just wonder for her if she just is more used to not covering it outside. She sees the dogs do it so why can't she. I will totally be watching your forum. I never thought though that it could be the litter. The clumping is new though. Well for the last few months. I hope you figure it out!!!

Can the litter box Be placed in a room with a kitty door installed in the door that only admits Vader?

Auhk too bad. Some kitty doors can have a collar that has a radio frequency that'd transmit a code to the door. It'd only admit the cat wearing the collar.
