A family member of mine has an 8 week old kitten that appears to have a umbilical hernia. It doesn't seem to hurt him but it still looks pretty big. I have read that they go away on their own sometimes? Is this true or does he need to be operated on? Thanks!

They do go away on their own sometimes but i think it best to have a vet to operated on him in case a organ fall in which will cause problems

If a loop of intestine protrudes from kitten's belly into hernia (which is what it sounds like since you describe it as "pretty big") it can strangulate, die, and start to rot. Major surgery, big bill.

Take to vet for a checkup and see if kitten weighs 2 pounds they can neuter and repair hernia at the same time.

:yeah: We've had a couple of kittens at the shelter with umbilical hernias. If they're not too bad, the vet usually waits and repairs the hernia when neutering. A major hernia is operated on ASAP for the above reason.
