That looks like it's something that will wash off.  If it does and it appears slightly reddish, then it very well might be flea "droppings".

Thx to all posters. In the end it's probably not fleas as we live on top floor (5th) and cat never goes out. It is something like acne blackheads, from what I've read yesterday online. Pete's fur seems a lot better today since I gave him a big wash yesterday. But he still has some dots but nowhere near as bad so it must just have been that he was getting too oily etc. and he had too much dandruff before which is minimal today :-)

From http://www.justanswer.com/pet-cat/104ib-cat-tiny-dark-spots-abdomen-this.html

"if the flea dirt test is negative, that these black spots are particles of hardened skin oils which have come to the surface of the skin. My cat has these all the time, and they're harmless. He's also part calico (mom was calico), and his coloring is orange and white. He has these black spots frequently around his nipples, and they just seem to be hyper-pigmentation on his skin. Orange and white cats and Calicos are more prone to these 'freckles' or hyper-pigmentation--just extra melanin (coloring in the skin)."

Well isn't that interesting!  I have a calico, but I've never seen anything like that on her.  Maybe it only happens on the orange and white cats, NOT the calicos.

Here is a picture. ..

I was particularly worried about my cat since she is pregnant (all kittens go to good homes and good friends of mine do not worry) and I suddenly noticed these black specks too but based on the picture it seems it's the same thing and a lot of people have said it is a very normal thing they see on almost all cats I wouldn't worry

Flea dirt will contain blood. Take a white paper towel and dampen it. If you rub the cat with the paper towel and the black spots turn red, it's flea dirt.

Do not assume that because you live on the fifth floor that it can't be fleas; you can easily carry them in on a sock if a neighbor has fleas. And dogs who get walked outside are prime carriers of outside fleas, esp if they are not given monthly flea medicine. Are there any dogs on your floor on in the building?

If the spots came off, they aren't freckles. [emoji]128521[/emoji]

I'm sorry. But please do not listen to this advice. It is impossible for a cat to be "calico" especially a male! It is simply just a color of fur not a cat breed. Calicos and tortoiseshells are female only!
Yes. Orange cats are prone to skin pigmentation. Mostly around the eyes and mouth.

I had to chime in. That calico comment was driving me bananas.
I don't think anyone said that Calico was a breed?    I've actually met a male Calico.. it's not impossible but it is rare.

They are rare but definitely not impossible! :) apparently male calicos are infertile but my boy, Simba (to the left), was already neutered before I got him so was unable to find out. He has beautiful soft fur and gets these little black spots occasionally on his belly too. Quite fascinating!
