Hi guys, I have a concern. We have two female cats and they are both spayed. Their pee is odorless. Our newest addition is a male, 1year, and he was neutered three weeks ago. His pee smells AWFUL. I thought perhaps the pee smelled worse because he wasn't neutered, but it's been three weeks. Does it take longer? Will his pee always stink? Is it a health concern? Thanks!

I've got personal experience with this one.  It can take hormones 6-8 weeks to settle down after neuter surgery, and testosterone is responsible for the rank odor in male cat urine.

I would think the odor should start diminishing soon.  If it's still highly noxious after the six week mark, you may want to consult your vet.  Once the hormones have settled down, stinky pee is usually a sign of urinary tract problems requiring medical attention.  Just keep an eye out for straining or vocalizing in the box, frequent trips, abnormally small pee clumps, blood in the urine, urinating outside the box (if he starts), lethargy or loss of appetite.  If everything else is normal, I wouldn't worry at this point.

 for sweeter smelling days ahead!

Annother cause of stinky pee is when a male cat is neutered late. He should be neutered as early as possible, that way he doesn't develop that ammonia odor. Usually male cats that were neutered late often have a problem with spraying that can be hard to break.
Make sure he isn't spraying while going potty either.
Like the user above said, it could be a UTI. Dry foods are usually the culprit of UTIs, and I would feed him either wet food or an all natural diet. If crystals continue to build up, it'll block him from going at all. If you can, try to see what color his urine is, if it's a dark yellow or red color that's a big sign.
Some cats just have smellier pee then others. Keep him well hydrated and that should help with the odor somewhat.

Boy pee always smells more! My boy has his own box and so does the girl, then they share one! I would feed him watered down canned food to keep him hydrated and prevent any future issues!

We are really hoping it is just his hormones needing to level out. We have kept a pretty good eye on him and he doesn't seem to use the litter box anymore often than our two girls and he doesn't strain or vocalize while in the litter box.

We wish we could have neutered him earlier but we did not get him until he was a year old and neutered him right away. He has not had any issues spraying at home, before or after his neuter. He did spray at the vet before his neuter, but that was because of all the other cat smells we believe. We would LOVE to get him on a fully wet diet but we are having a hard enough time trying to get him on a scheduled feeding like our two girls are. So far we are able to feed him one 3 oz. can of wet food a day that we water down. He also gets dry food for now until we are able to get him onto the same scheduled feedings as our two girls. We have multiple fresh water sources available to him throughout the house. If anyone has any suggestions on how to make the transition to scheduled feedings a little easier on him and us, it would also be greatly appreciated! (:
