We found what i believe to be a juvenile siberian mixed stray, just skin and bones, in our yard yesterday. Were ofc cat people so i snached her right up, and i am keeping her in a spare room. shes eating / drinking and i have a vet appt scheduled for wednesday (2 days away) It would be sooner if i could...

Her stool appeared normal, thank god, but her back leg seems to be troubling her, and she wont let me near it to investigate.

i have recent left over Orbax Antibiotic (just an extra bottle prescribed by emergency care, but i got diff meds from main vet, so they went unused in fridge) Since i cant get her to the vet yet, im afraid there may be an infection in her foot, it looks a lil swollen. i called my vet, but you never talk to the vet, only the office assistant, and really all she could tell me is that it wouldn't hurt her.

I dont know if its sprained, fractured, or broken, but i know things like that can get infected.

any advice to offer?

P.S. I named her Asia, and my avatar is a pic of her.

Her having an inflammation doesnt need to mean there is an infection too.

I mean, if the bone is sprained, it will surely get inlammed, but its essentielly an mechanical  stress, not bacterial.

And if so, antibiotics wont help.   Orbax is as I understand it, in tableto give via mouth?  And thus, it kills not only the harmful bacterias, but also, the useful bacterias in intestines....

Thus, useful in an emergency, but not as some sort of all round protection "what if."

Im no vet, nor paramedic, but my advice would be, wait with this antibitica, till you see there is or was open wounds, and or clear traces of infection. Like pus, or high raised fever.

If it is an local inflammation because of mechanical problems, what you are doing is the most important help: being in a safe place, stressfri, good food, and can rest.

Let the body and soul heal itself.

If you can get raw goat milk, give it to her.  Very healthsome.  Why, you can drink it yourself for a better overall health.   :)

If there is no raw goat milk but just bottled, its OK too but not as fantastic.

Tx for caring!

Good luck!

ps.  Why Asia?   In Polish it would be  very friendly and short f

thank you so much for your reply.

i will wait =) I'm just worried because shes so, so, so thin. when you put your index and thumb around her spine, over her stomach, your fingers practically meet. but at the moment she seems to be improving. she certainly has an appetite! I may be able to get goats milk at an organic food store!

I named her Asia because she looks asian to me. beautiful upturned eyes, and dark fur. and she talks to me when i sing it to her. Shes also missing half an ear. looks like someone did with shears. just so grateful i found her.

Thank you so much for helping her.  Please wait until you see the vet on Wednesday.  Just give her wet food to eat and fresh water.  Also give her lots of love and attention.  Make sure when you are at the vet they check to see if she is micro chipped in case she has an owner that is looking for her.

Also make sure she is checked for fleas, stool sample for parasites and also see if determine if you want to check for Fiv or Felv.  Also check to see if she has been spayed.

Thank you once again for helping her.

I would wait on the antibiotics but that's just me.  If you can't tell if she has an infection, the antibiotics won't help.  As thin as she is, the antibiotics may overburden her system.  They may upset her GI tract and she doesn't need that now.  She needs to have good GI health to put some more weight on.

Having said that, if the antibiotics aren't out-of-date, they probably won't hurt.  But make sure you tell the vet you gave them to her, as he wouldn't want to prescribe another antibiotic that might be a cross-purposes with these.

You can help beef her up by offering her kitten food for a bit.  It has extra nutrition she could use now.  Thank you so much for helping her!

thank you guy for your quick replies! I will wait til Wednesday. I have a line of credit at the emergency care here in town, but im trying to avoid it due to 26% apr, and their over blown prices. however at the first sign shes going downhill I will rush her there.

she and I have become roomies, because I don't want to leave her alone, and this is a multi-cat house, so she has to be quarantined until she gets shots / tests. not to mention its just added stress...

thx again for the quick response! I will keep you guys updated on her progress =)

I've used liquid Orbax for my outdoor feral on two occasions, once for an eye infection and  URI that was turning into pneumonia, and the other for an injured ear that was clearly infected. It has the advantage of being scentless and odorless, so you can put it in wet food and the cat won't know it's there, and unlike other antibiotics, it's a once a day dose instead of twice. It's pricey at forty dollars a bottle, but works as a broad spectrum antibiotic that can be used for a variety of infections. The main reason I wouldn't recommend you using Orbax at this point is because it's from a family of antibiotics (fluoroquinolones--most notably the antibiotic Baytril) that have, in rare instances, caused temporary and permanent blindness in cats. I worried endlessly when I gave it to my feral, but since I was unable to catch him to get him to a vet, I took the risk of giving it to him and it saved his life. But I use Orbax only on him, never on my other cats. It's not the ideal choice of antibiotic.

Try to call your vet's office again and explain the situation and ask if there are any cancellations, or if they can squeeze your cat in.  Some vets will squeeze you in and charge an additional fee, but it's usually still less expensive than taking the cat to an emergency vet.

If she seems as though she's in pain or stops eating, then it's time for the emergency vet.

It's great that you took her in. It sounds like someone just dumped her.

Thanks for all of your replies! Asia is improving everyday and I really have hope for her! She sees the Doc tomorrow, but i can tell a difference already. shes been eating and drinking and a lil hydration goes a long way. She talks a lot, and loves to cuddle. I feel like i might break her tho, every time i touch her, shes so skeletal.

I have been feeding her kitten chow as recommended and she loves wet food. I don't want to speak too soon, but I think she might be a success story <3 I will have to integrate her into my kitty pride after shes stronger... but Im just so grateful. Thx again for all the replies and ill keep you posted!

Asia saw my Vet today, and I think she'll be ok! Shes a lot older than i thought, maybe 10+ according to the Doc. Theres no broken bones or anything, her back legs just hurt because of age + emaciation, so its good i didn't use the Antibiotic, so thank you for your advice!

Also as someone had said, she was fixed and her ear clipping was an indication of that. I was able to get her shots, and he gave me a vitamin supplement to put in her food.

A big thank you to everyone who responded when i was worried sick. I had no one else to ask except google... and I got a lot better info here. Asia is my 4th rescue (i'm a borderline hoarder at this point... lol), But she was by far in the worst condition I personally have ever seen a cat in. I am so grateful i've been given the opportunity to give this sweet little angel a good life. I can't believe someone would throw her away like trash... Shes such a treasure. So sweet, and obviously used to people... But she'll have a cushy gig now.

As aforementioned, I do have other cats and i'm worried that will be too much stress for her right now, so she will live in my office, (Spare Bedroom), and be my little shop kitty until shes stronger =)

Again thx to all! Asia thanks you too!

Wonderful news!  So glad Asia found you.  What a shame she got dumped or lost.

Your plan to give her her own room is a solid one.  She will need to adjust to her new home in a place where she can feel safe (and call her own for a bit!)

Please keep us posted!
