Good morning,

My husband and I adopted two sister kittens (Amy and Rory)  from a local shelter back at the beginning of February.  Sadly, we lost Rory to FIP on March 11th :(  Both kittens had upper respiratory infections when we got them, and Amy's has since cleared up.  Since we got her, she has had a strange odor coming from her nose.  It's difficult to describe, but it kind of smells like sour milk.  Sometimes it's really strong and you can smell it when she walks in the room (this was more when we first got her, not happening now), and other times you can't smell it at all.  She's been tested for FIV and FELV (both negative), I know she's been exposed to the Coronavirus since her sister had FIP however she's not showing any signs of FIP at all,  and is up to date on all her vaccinations.  We've given the vet a few fecal samples over last couple months and she's never found anything like parasites or anything.  She has been treated for fleas as well, because the vet saw a couple fleas on her sister.  She also contracted ringworm on her ears which we've been treating with Tresaderm.  She's seen the vet numerous times (we have 3 vets in the office we go to and she has seen all 3 on different occasions) and none of them have been able to pinpoint the cause for this smell.  She seems completely healthy other than the Ringworm and is eating and drinking great and has a ton of energy.   I've been trying to find anything on the internet about this smell and I haven't been able to find anything at all.  It's strange that the smell comes and goes and is worse on some days more than others.   She gets a can of wet food every day, and there is dry food down for her all the time.  We feed her only food that doesn't have byproducts and grains because any other kind was giving her lots of gas, lol.  I've tried noting if the odor is worse or better based on the flavor of food she's gotten that day and haven't been able to find anything.  The smell is definitely coming from her nose, I've smelled her ears and there is no smell and I've smelled her breath and there is no smell.  She's not having any nasal discharge or excessive sneezing or anything.   The vets don't seem too concerned with it because she seems healthy otherwise, but it's driving me nuts I want to know what's causing it.  I was wondering if it could be allergy related (especially since she's been itching her ears and head a lot - even though I know she has the ringworm), either like seasonal type allergies or food allergies, but I honestly have no idea.  She doesn't get any human food at all, and the only treats she gets are also grain and byproduct free and she only gets a couple each day after she gets her Tresaderm.  So does anyone have any ideas at all???  I'm open to all suggestions/thoughts/theories.  Thanks!! :)

Hello
I am new to the cat site, and I am no expert, but it sounds like that smell could be due to an infection of some sort in her nose.  A lowered immune system could be the cause, which would make sense based off your description of her past.  Seeing she has been treated, and the smell is getting better, hopefully it clears up and if there is an infection she will fight it off.  If not, try some holistic remedies that can boost her immune system!  I just got recommended Apple cyder vinegar a few weeks ago.  I had no clue the stuff could be used on cats.  Itself, ACV has so many uses.  Ill chime in to hear what other, probably more knowledgeable people have to say on the matter though.

Thanks! Yeah I was thinking infection too but she seems to be doing well otherwise. I forgot to mention before that we've also been giving her Lysine with her wet food in the hopes of boosting her immune system some. Thanks for your feedback! :)
