Hey everyone. About an hour ago I've noticed a very small stray kitten (barely able to walk) near my home, who was in danger of being run over by traffic. I observed it for a while from far away, and have seen a cat approach it once (its mother?). My neighbor passed by and moved it from traffic to save it. He moved it about 15-20 meters, and I don't know wether the mother has seen it or not.. What should I do next? Will its mom abandon it? Should I intervene or is it likely that it will turn out alright?

Observe it.  If it WAS the mother, she will probably fetch it.

But be ready to take in the kitten.

Cat moms dont abandon their kittens just because a human touched it, its only rabbits who may do that.

But if mom doenst returns, or it comes into danger again...  You must do something.

Tx for caring!

Good luck!

Your other option is to take it in directly NOW, if you are willing to raise it and foster it (fostering at this age is easy).

After all the greatest gift you can give to a homeless kitten is to adopt it, and have it as your own loved cat.  Or find it someone other loving it.

So one variation when it is now in distress, is to take the sure above the unsure and adopt it already now.

With any luck, the mom will pehaps follow, and with a little luck you may perhaps help her too, if such is your wish.

Good luck!

ps.

And this is also the greatest gift to the mom, even if she perhaps not recognizes this at first and keeps to seek and mourn after the kitten.

Believe me, if she KNEW the kitten is safe and nicely raised up, she would be contend with it.  Who knows, she perhaps understand the situation anyway.

ps 2.  I suppose the kitten is meowing some.  And thus, if the mom is nearby, she hears it well. She may also probably feel the smell.

But if this cat you saw isnt fetching the kitten although it is meowing, it is probably NOT the mom, but some other cat who got curious.

Thanks for the help! Unfortunately I don't believe I'll be able to take the kitten home.. Currently it's in a place near my house where all the cats from around the block (about 10) hang around. It's dark there and I can't keep watch without being so close that the mother won't approach the kitten. Could the kitten make it through a mildly warm night (about 18 degrees Celsius)?

yes, if it is a OK healthy kitten he will surely manage, if not anything else happens to it.

If the mom hasnt fetched it yet, the kitten got more probably dumped there, just because the place is known to be a place where there are many cats.

If so, the kitten is totally defenceless, even if it wont freeze to death - which it wont.  But dont having the least clue, any enemy will make piecemeal of it.

And it will of course perish. Even if there is a slim possibility some of the adult cats may adopt it - it happens, but its pretty rare.

Please go in and fetch it NOW.  You dont need any fancy home, a cage or a room in a cellar is more than enough for now. Be sure it has it warmth, though.  It can not even process food properly if chilled out.

ps.  You dont even need a cage, if it si barely walking, you can have it in a cardboard box, as simply as that.

Put down a towel, so its nice and cozy.   Perhaps something warming up, if it is really chilly.
