Just a few weeks ago I had taken my cat, Shadow, in for her yearly shots and had her checked for worms (which did come back negative).  Then in the last few days, she had started to clean her hiney more often and then started using her litter box more.  I called the emergency vet in another town in my area and they said that if she got any worse to bring her in as sounded like she had a UTI.  Where I take her in in my town opened at  7am and took her in pretty much right away, but they had to call the vet in as they don't come in until 8.  Well, it did come back to having a UTI, so have to switch foods to the prescription kind (Hill's) S/D and then to the C/D after the first bag is done and was also given most food as well.  Which I'm surprised that she took to both right away.  Have to have her on Orbax 0.8mls once a day until the bottle is gone, which is a 20ml bottle.  UGH!  She's going to COMPLETELY hate us as that's about 25 days!  She was NOT a happy camper with either visit as she got quite stressed as her hears got quite red.  I've NEVER seen them get that red before when had taken her in previously for shots or to get microchipped.  But my main question is that with anyone who's gone through this with their cat, how often do you clean out the litter box?  I mean take it and dump out the litter and put new in?  Shadow is the only pet in the home.  This is Shadow.

Sorry to hear that kitty isn't feeling well.

As for your question, I scoop the little box once a day, and then dump and clean the whole thing once every 2 months. I leave 4 inches of litter in the box so that the pee never hits the bottom of the box - that's why I don't dump it out more often.

As for the UTI, I would recommend feeding more wet food, with water mixed in. The more water and moisture, the better! :)

Thanks, Nora1.  I do something similar, but I usually try to do it once a month as she likes to dig to China when she usually goes, regardless if it's pee or poop!!  But I just wasn't sure if I should clean it more often now since she's having that issue and having a bit of blood and such.  When you clean it good, what do you usually use?  I'll usually use Dawn Dish soap and bleach.  I will have to see where else I could get the food instead of the vet's or online.  Know that Petco doesn't sell anything like the Hill's prescription kind, but not sure where (or if) anywhere else would sell it.  I usually feed her the most food twice a day, but with this prescription kind, know it's going to be a bit more expensive.  I was just surprised she really took to it considering it was a flavor that she's never had before.  She's very picky!!  I've been wanting and hoping to get her more water into her, but also don't want to stress her out more than she already is with what she's had to go through already and more than likely stressed out enough with what she's going through on top of having to have the medicine.  Thanks again!

Hahaha Nora digs to China too! The sides on the box are quite high and it has a lid so it keeps it all in thank goodness!

For cleaning the box, I just use dish soap and very hot water. I normally use the bath tub, fill the box with soap and hot water then let it sit for roughly 20 minutes. I also soak the littler box scoop once a week in hot soapy water.

Since she has the UTI, maybe clean and scrub the box a little more often.

LOL Glad that I'm not the only one dealing with it. The sides are high but don't have a top to it. So having fun sweep arearound it. Not fun stepping in it when going to the freezer! Have the clump and seal now compared to the Arm and Hammer Ultra Last which are a bit bigger grains.

We have a small apartment so only have the one box for her to use, so not sure if that would be good unless I do it when she's sleeping more during the day like she is now. Juse cleaned it out yesterday, so it should be good for a bit.
