Care Fresh as cat litter?

My 10 month and 8 month old kittens stopped using the litterbox appropriately. I *thought* it was our Siamese mix, S'mores, but then I caught our orange tabby, Honeydew, 'red-handed'. Since then, he's been caught numerous times peeing on all things soft. Paper, paper towels, toilet paper, blankets, clothing, you name it, he's peed on it. Last night for instance, my 11 month old destroyed a roll of paper towels, and before I could even get it cleaned up, honeydew had already peed on it.

We've had them both to the vet, currently awaiting results of their urinalysis, but the vet thinks it's behavioral. They are in great health overall. If it is behavioral, I was wondering if Care Fresh as cat litter will help him get what he wants from his litter, and stop him peeing on everything else, or will he then associate any soft item as a great place to pee, like he does now? He's caused so much damage to our belongings, I can't trust him in half the house...I really need to get him back to the litterbox.

its a paper bedding, usually used for small animals like hamsters, rabbits, guinea pigs, etc. Ive never used Yesterday's News, but from what I've seen of it, it's a pretty similar product, except Care Fresh isn't in pellets, it's little shredded pieces.

I saw on Amazon others have used it as litter for their cats, but no one has mentioned whether or not they had problems with inappropriate elimination before or after, so I'm not really sure what to think.

Both cats are being neutered tomorrow, and I've read they should be using something soft like shredded newspaper, I think I might pick up the Care Fresh at least for their recuperation, I imagine it will hold in smells better than newspaper.

I used CareFresh for my cats for awhile when I also had a rabbit, and it works pretty good, you just need to clean it more often. It could be that your cats dont like the texture of the litter you are using, so providing them with a softer version in an acceptable location may just work.

it wouldnt hurt to give it a try and also try to keep any other soft stuff off the floor, especially while transitioning. I had to keep all laundry, plastic bags and cardboard off the floor when my cat had trouble, but he was elderly with kidney problems, so hopefully your kitties are healthy and just have a different preference for litter. Good luck.

Gammeldame thanks for your experience! I followed up with the vet, because each time Honeydew gets to be out of the bathroom, he searches for paper towels. Luckily I've been able to stop him the last couple of times before he manages to do anything, and I think I found his go-to spot, so that will hopefully help. I have 4 kids, so paper towels, toilet paper, cardboard and clothing seem to always be lurking somewhere! I'm having to go around anywhere he has access to when he's out (open plan house, ahhh) in search of any of these items and hope I've found them before he has!

I forgot to mention, we've tried 3 litters so far, all while keeping his usual litter in there as well, to see if we hit on a winner. So far he's being incredibly stubborn and tries to hold it until he gets out of the bathroom and then races around looking for his preferred material. When we catch him doing this he goes back to his room, and he immediately uses the litterbox, so hopefully we're making some progress, even if it's itty bitty!

Hopefully the kitties surgery will help with your problem. Will you be able to keep them in a fairly small space with the carefresh litter box close by?
