Hi,

I'm a newbie.  My name is Baby May and my mama is Mary.  I suffer from megacolon and my mama found the site while trying to figure out how to get ME to eat the Miralax in a way that my sister won't get any of it.  She found the article on Beech Nut baby food not having onion or garlic in it, and so today, I got a TREAT of a teaspoon of beef baby food with Miralax and my sister didn't get any.  Mom is very appreciative of the knowledge she found here to help care for me, and we both are glad we found the site.

Mom found me hiding in the bushes when I was a small fry.  I'd been kicked out and left to die in the weeds. :(  Mama took me in like she did my sister, Callie.  We both were left to die in the weeds, and are very thankful for our new home.  Callie doesn't like me much.  She's prissy and grooms excessively, but I tolerate that. It's probably due to how she was tossed out, too (or the cause of it).  We love our new home, though.  Mama lets us look through all the windows at the birds and we lay on the window sills a lot.  Mama calls it the Kitty Nature Channel.

Thanks again for the help in getting my medicine down.  I just hope the Miralax works for me.

This is Baby May's mama, Mary.  Sorry, I didn't see the catspeak forum till I posted this, but honestly, I DO hope this works.  I don't want to give her a lot of baby food, but I DO need her to eat her Miralax in a way her sister can't get into it.  I already use Royal Canin fiber response pretty successfully on her, but there are still times she needs more than that.  SO, thanks again. and I'll be watching the forums for more helpful hints.

Welcome.

Do you feed the Fiber Response dry or wet? Sometimes cats get constipated because there isn't enough moisture in the stool to get it out easily. If you're using the dry, maybe try a wet food to help boost the available moisture. What osmotic laxatives like those do is pull moisture so it is more manageable. I've had the most success mixing those laxatives into the sauce/broth that's in wet cat food cans.

Our older cat gets a generic brand Restoralax twice a day, and I have to keep that away from our younger cat at feeding times too. I meal feed wet food, so what I do for breakfast and dinner is get a saucer, put a little dollop of the cat food sauce on it, add as much laxative as the cat needs, add a drop of water, and mix it all in. It's no more than two or three laps, and it's all gone. The more there is, the longer it takes, the more likely he is to not eat it all. I put it down directly in front of the cat it's for at the same time I put down a normal plate of food for our other cat, so she's busy eating her fill.

Sometimes if he's not walking around begging for food in the morning and I have to give the laxatives later, I get a kibble or a treat and I toss it to distract the little one while offering the plate with laxatives (or sometimes a spoon) to the older one. Our vet says it's hard to wrong with those laxatives, and they usually work (and are easier to give than Lactulose). Good luck!

I don't give MUCH of the Fiber Response PERIOD, but it works. It's a dry food, which she won't eat well anyhow, but the little she gets seems to help her a lot.  Her regular food is wet with water in the dish as well.  She doesn't particularly like a water bowl, but she'll drink when she's thirsty.....not that it's often, thus the water in her food dish.    The Fiber Response is enough to usually keep her "regular" but lately, that hasn't been doing the job.  It seems that about every four months she needs her laxative to get her going again.  She went a nice poo yesterday and again today, so I think she's back on track, but even so.........I'm doing Miralax for at least today and tomorrow just to be sure.  I also often feed broth that I have personally made.  I'll boil chicken or turkey or beef with nothing in it but water, then pour it over her food.  She likes that, too, but it's always part of her regular diet.  She also HATES any food that isn't pate.  She won't even LOOK at chunk food (Picky thing).  We were using lactalose, but it was such a FIGHT to get it down her and she wouldn't eat any food it was placed into.  AND....it didn't seem to do any more good than the Fiber Response does.  Miralax helps her far more, it seems. (for now anyhow)
