Got a new kitty & have been posting  a lot.  My  precious Rizzo was put to sleep in Jan.  Although I took him out all summer he never bothered the window screens or tried to get out.  My new kitty was raised as an indoor/outdoor cat.  She runs for the door every time it opens.  When summer comes I am afraid my new little girl is going to continuously try to find a way out.  Here in most of the US letting your cat out alone is illegal.  Any thoughts on how to keep her from wrecking my screens & getting out? I don't want to run the air all summer.

Where I live it always seems to go from running the heat to running the AC with only a couple days of a break in between.

When I do open the windows; I open them from the top and just crack the bottom.  I have blinds on all of the windows and I leave them down enough to discourage the girls from jumping up.

You can replace the current screens with a pet-proof one. Here's one such screen: http://www.metroscreenworks.com/pet-screen.php
Thank you! This sounds good.  What about them prying the whole screen out.  I have windows that open horizontally.  The screens are held in grooves in the window frame.  Not very hard to remove if you are smart.  Hope this kitty can't figure it out.  Maybe I can leave Rizzo's GPS on her when the windows are open but it is a bit heavy for a small cat to wear continuously.  Rizzo knew not to cross roads & stayed in our general area.  Even with the GPS (75 ft area) he got his harness caught in a bush.  I looked for him for hours & did find him until he popped his little face out.  This little girl is used to a rural area & who knows where she might go.  Wanted her to be an indoor only cat so I hope the screen will work.

I don't think this will work for me.  I like my windows wide open in the summer & never had a problem with my little boy; he was so polite around the home.  My new kitty first name is play, followed by eat, lastly home wrecker.  My Rizzo had been declawed by some fool when he was a baby so didn't have the best tools for pulling out screens.  He never tried, however.  Thanks

Yeah; that wouldn't work with side opening windows.  Have you looked into baby-proofing items?  I know they make some kind of gate thing so kids won't fall out; but I'm thinking a cat would fit through bars.

Hopefully your kitty won't take an interest in popping the screens out or tearing them at all.

Our windows open horizontally, too, and our last cat easily popped the screens. What we did was figure out which windows we absolutely wanted to have open in warm weather, and had a window installation company install Pet Screen in custom-made aluminum frames for those windows. It was expensive, but well worth it.

Could you cut some wooden or metal latticework, e.g., trellises, and put it inside or outside the screens? Another alternative, which we used before getting the Pet Screen, is to put "cat net" on the exterior of the window apertures. It's basically nylon fishing net.

Try doubling up: put a portable window screen in the window (s) that you keep open. Most are fairly inexpensive. I do thst now, because my cat somehow nipped one of the screens . Worth a try!

Try putting a cooling rack, like the kind you cool cake and muffins on, in front of the screen. They come in various shapes and sizes. I bought mine from a thrift store. That’s what I used when I lived on the top floor of a condominium building. The windows opened sideways (horizontally?) and there was a wide window ledge that Ritz loved to jump up onto and walk back and forth, viewing the birds from afar.
We moved into a one story townhouse 2.5 years ago. The screens was ‘child proofed’—suppose to withstand a toddler trying to push out the screen. When we first moved in, Ritz charged the screen a couple of times (see bird UP CLOSE, want Bird!) but it has held. Same when she attempted to become one with the screen and climb up the window (see INSECT UP CLOSE, want insect!).
Finally, during a transition/introduction process between Hercules and Ritz, I used a screen door that my maintenance guru replaced with a pet strength screen. Hercules had very long nails (outdoor cat in a colony for two years) that tore through that screen. He, however, stayed in the room.
