My cat is on Zyrtec but his dosage is a 10mg tablet twice daily. He is male and about 8 pounds. I am wondering if that is a too large a dose? I asked the clinic but they said it was fine.He has had one but is very drowsy. Anyone have any advice regarding cats and zyrtec?  Thank you in advance.

that is a larger than normal dose. is that what the vet prescribed? are you sure it's not 5 mg twice daily for a total of 10 mg daily?

That seems like a lot to me as well.10mg is a whole pill, human dosage. That makes me incredibly drowsy. I can't imagine a cat on that much. Please contact your vet to double check on dosing instructions

I did, the dr, had it written for me on piece of paper and I double checked by calling and in fact, 1 tablet 10mg twice daily. It did make him very drowsy, so much so, I will not give it to him tomorrow, I will only give him half a tablet twice daily.

He had started out with a very bad upper respiratory infection and was given clavamox, then a week later not much improvement, then orbax for two weeks, that helped very much but he was still stuffy and not quite well. Then today, zyrtec.

What do you think of the Zyrtec though?

Yes, I noticed that when I read the back of the label which is why I called the clinic. I plan on just giving him a half tablet a day and seeing how he does, going no more than a whole tablet total.

I had Minnie on zyrtec for her belly baldness and it totally helped her... I gave her 1/2 of the 10mg pill in the morning, and 1/2 at night... it didn't make her drowsy...but.. heads up it may really pick up the appetite :) Oh and to clarify... I gave it to her on my own, not by a vet.

He is on it due to having congestion and a little runny nose and eyes. He got much better after the orbax but still some congestion.

I'm sorry your furbaby is going through that...sure hope he can get permanent relief. We didn't have any bad side effects with Zyrtec.... increased drinking and appetite was about it.

Thank you, he is not as congested and is feeling better. I am only giving him half of a tablet a day as a whole tablet made him far too drowsy.

I wanted to update that he is doing well and no longer congested or sneezing. He gets a half tablet twice daily.
