My apartment is about to be treated for bugs and we need to get our cats out of there for several hours.  The hitch is that one of our cats, Squeaky, does not like any change in his routine.  He is a "deli-cat" and needs special attention...What kind of kitty sitter should we get?  And how do we handle Squeaky, who would most likely hide?

Is there a family member or friend the cats have met before? If it's only for a few hours, keep them in a more confined room where they can hide safely, and make sure you bring things that smell very much like home, like favourite beds and blankets. We had our apartment sprayed last fall, and at the time we only had Mo. My boyfriend hung out at his sister's house with Mo just wandering around their closed off basement.

For nervous cats, the smaller the room, the less overwhelming. It may be easier to just give them the time and space the way you would with an introduction to a new home. A few hours in a small room means they shouldn't feel pressured to leave that room, nor to interact directly with anyone they may be nervous of. It also means you can easily and safely retrieve them when it's safe to take them home. Since it might just be a meal or two, anyone you trust to feed your cats and leave them to calm down will do. If I had the option, I would choose a friend or family member over hiring a stranger as a cat sitter just for a few hours one day.

I wouldn't let the cats stay in the house while the exterminators are there with their various chemicals. Take the cats to someone's house for the day, perhaps a family member or relative or friend. Or ask the vet about boarding for the day. When I had work done in my place for a week, I had to board my Aby at the boarding place down the street. I stayed with my parents for the week but couldn't risk bringing my Aby with me (my parents' house is not Aby-proof).

I just re-read my post and realized it sounds like I'm suggesting to leave the cats IN the home, but what I meant is pretty much as LTS3 suggests in a friend or family's house in a smaller room, not your own during spraying.
