Hi everyone,

New to the forum here but didn't see any threads specific to this. Apologies in advance if there's already a thread, please feel free to direct me to that thread.

I adopted my cat Elmer about 2 months ago. He's 3 years old, male, siamese tabby mix.

About 2 days ago, I noticed a small pink bump on this upper lip where his canine is. I took him to the vet and he (the vet) wasn't too concerned and just said we should monitor it.

So it's been two days and the bump doesn't seem to be going away. In fact, it looks slightly more like a sore (the middle SEEMs watery, still small so kind of hard to tell).

The reason I'm concerned is because Elmer was diagnosed with URI at the shelter but they weren't worried because they gave him antibiotics. However, I've read online that URI can be caused by feline herpes. So now I'm worried that this bump is a symptom of a flare-up, which may need medical attention.

I mentioned this to my vet and asked whether I should get a PCR test to diagnose whether Elmer has feline herpes but he said it is unnecessary b/c:

I’m mainly not sure about statement 3 b/c I haven’t had Elmer for that long so I haven’t had the opportunity to really observe the frequency and severity of potential flare-ups should they occur.

Does anyone know what this could be?

How concerned should I be? Should I take him to the vet again soon?

Anyone else have much experience with URI? I have more questions…

Hmmm, it could be an allergic reaction? It looks like the red bumps my friend's cat gets sometimes when he gets into the wrong food. Does Elmer scratch it or seem in discomfort?

Nope, doesn't seem to cause Elmer any discomfort. No scratching or anything that I've seen.

An indolent (painless and slow to change) ulcer, or rodent ulcer, is usually found on the margin of the cat's upper lip. The indolent ulcer has a very unique appearance and typically does not require further diagnostics. At times, a lesion will also form on the cat's tongue; usually near the back of the mouth. The exact cause of an indolent ulcer is not known although a genetic predisposition and a hypersensitivity reaction, such as flea-bite dermatitis, are highly suspected. This is the most common lesion of the eosinophilic diseases.

Feline herpes is not like human herpes, feline herpes IS a type of URI, and does not present with skin bumps on the face.  Calici virus does present with sores inside  the mouth, they are painful and the cat is obviously sick, this does not appear to be that.  I agree it sounds like what @detmut  said, and a small possibility of ringworm, but that would usually show multiple spots, and only after being at a shelter, or outside with other infected cats.
