Friday night he vomited all the canned food he'd just eaten; he didn't eat or drink at all until I started giving him water with a syringe around 6 PM on Saturday.  A few hours after I started giving water, he ate on his own.  He had a few morsels of dry food, but then vomited all of it.  This morning (Sunday) I started giving water again.

He's an adult, but I've had him only 3 months, so I don't know if the problem is related to this condition or to something else.

Can he have Pedialyte?  If so, how much?  I don't know his current weight but it's over 11 lbs.  Getting to a vet today isn't an option, so I need to do what I can to keep him hydrated until Monday.

After doing some reading I see that nothing given orally will really help.  I have a 30C homeopahic remedy kit and a few loose remedies; I was thinking of giving him ipecac 30C.  Any suggestions/comments?

I would not use ipecac for anything except under the advise of a vet.  Ipecac causes vomiting and your cat is vomiting without assistance.  The FIV status could be connected although if your cat is a young adult then i would doubt it, but something is wrong and I would consult a vet on MOnday.

I'm talking about the homeopathic remedy ipecac, not syrup of ipecac, just in case there was any confusion.

My homeopathic vet isn't in the office until Tuesday and I don't know if she could see him right away.  Ipecac 30C this is something she'd once prescribed for another cat that was vomiting.  It's also recommend by Dr. Pitcairn for vomiting ("Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats").

I was talking about the homeopathic remedy, not syrup of ipeca - two different things.

My homeopathic vet is out of the office until Tuesday and I'm not sure when she could see him, so I need to do something ASAP.  She'd once prescribed it for another cat with vomiting and Dr. Pitcairn also recommends it in one of his books I have.

If this has been going on since Friday night, waiting until Monday is more than long enough for me to consider it an emergency if he can't keep food or water down. Is there another vet you can visit? At this point, I wouldn't be concerned about homeopathic vets (and I would be wary of medicating at home, but I'm not familiar with ipeca), but getting food and water down before fatty liver becomes a reality would be paramount, and if it's still an issue beyond then, have him transferred to your regular vet as soon as they open. Call them and let them know it's an emergency. Emergency vet or a non-homeo vet would be my route ASAP, if the homeopathic one is unavailable.

You can try things like tuna water or plain chicken broth, but Pedialyte can be safely used for cats as well. Start small, a few drops frequently and as needed. I'm not sure what the limit is on safety, because there is such a thing as too much. Honestly, I would at least call the emergency vet and ask how much Pedialyte is safe. If you let them know you have every intention of getting to your regular vet tomorrow, they likely won't take issue you giving you that bit of advice without bringing him in.

Hi MeeYow,

Yeah, I would try the ipecac 30c. The great thing about homopathics is if its not the right remedy it just won't do anything. So no harm in trying it. The worst that can happen is you just waste a few tablets.

He's keeping the water down just fine; I'm very familiar with fatty liver (successfully treated another cat that had it), so I'm making sure to keep him hydrated.  I will take him to the regular vet on Monday, but I wanted to use homeopathy today and am hoping that someone familiar with it will chime in.  Thank you, for your reply. :)

Thank you so much - I needed that confirmation.  I am looking at the envelope with the Ipecac (it wasn't in my kit) and the doctor wrote on it 6-10 pellets.  It's my understanding that the fewer the pellets the stronger the dose; is that correct? So I don't know for sure which to do.

About an hour and 15 minutes after I gave him 6-10 pellets, he started eating.  He ate two more times in the next 20 minutes and hasn't stopped eating more than 4 hours after I gave it to him.  I continued to give him a little water, because he wasn't interested in the canned (just in the dry).  He's more vocal than he's been in days.  Truly miraculous.
