My 5 month old just got spayed. She is weAring a cone to keep her from licking. I have noticed since her return from the vet it seems like her breath is bad. She has always had slightly bad breath compared to my other cat but now it seems worse. I am not sure if it is the medicine or what. Just wondering and curious if you have any suggestions for freshening it up??

i noticed that you hadn't received any replies as yet. i'm not sure i'll have any useful suggestions, but will try.

but first, how is your little girl doing after her spay? i'm sure she's not loving the cone (sometimes referred to as 'the cone of shame').

i know that when cats are on medication(s) their scent can become unfamiliar to other resident cats -- effected/slightly changed by the medication. this may mean that it's possible that your girl's breath could be effected by being on medication, or possibly from the anesthesia she had during her spay.

since she had bad-ish breath before her spay, it might be worth discussing with your vet. sometimes there's a medical reason for the bad breath, while other times kitty just has bad-ish breath. a common reason for bad breath in cats is dental issues.

there are options to try to work on the breath to make it less bad. there's brushing, using a finger toothbrush with poultry or seafood or malt flavored toothpaste (made for cats). and there's oral gels and liquids, some that need spraying into the cats mouth and others that are placed inside cats mouths by drops or even some that you simply add to their water bowl. no matter what you choose to use, i'd suggest not using an approach that is forcing kitty -- this can only lead to kitty avoiding or being afraid of us, or an epic type physical battle. forcing kitty will generally not bring good results, and can negatively effect the relationship between you two.

here's a link to a very recent  thread here on TCS about brushing cat's teeth -- http://www.thecatsite.com/t/293541/tooth-brushin-cat-making-  progress#post_3712108 -- quite a few cat tooth brushing products are mentioned there. you might want to join that discussion...?

Thank you for your reply. She is doing well and when she goes back to get her stitches removed I will talk to her about the breath. It is getting a little better. Thank you
