Hi Guys,

recently I lost my lovely cat who was my world for 14 years (you can read about it here http://www.thecatsite.com/t/293529/how-to-stop-blaming-yourself-it-has-been-only-4-days#post_3711696)

Now I am longing for a new companion, but I feel like it is just not the time for it yet.

So recently I started reading Facebook posts from my local cat shelter and I was thinking about helping them. I know my baby had everything he possibly could, and then there are literally tens of little fury creatures out there with such terrible conditions that it is breaking my heart not to help in some way.

The conditions of the so called shelter are horrible as basically it is run as an association and all people working there are volunteers. I bought some food and made a donation, but these guys are really on their final stretches. Thankfully there are a lot of good, kind people who help them out, but what they are actually lacking is a shelter for these cats. Currently they are scattered around the city in several locations, some in private homes with 10 or 14 cats and some in local pet stores who were kind enough to offer space.

It is actually heartbreaking.

Now, I would like to help them out. I will volunteer on certain days, I will also purchase food occassionally and when I can I will make a donation.

But, is there ANY other way to do something BIG?

Like selling merchandise (what type of merchadise?), creating some fundraisers etc. I would love to hear you guys out, what you think would work or how to go about it... I am up for anything and would love to help them out.

I am mostly looking for IDEAS on how to help, I am  sure some of you have had some similar experience or have worked in a shelter.

Thank you guys!

How do they advertise cats and kittens for adoption?

If it is something on their site or Facebook or whatever could you help write appealing descriptions.

Are you a good photographer? Cute pictures are an excellent adjunct to the descriptions.

Make posters - about the cats & kittens AND also different ones about the rescue. Post them around town (asking permission first) and put them up in pet stores, grocery stores, library, town hall, etc. Make posters with tear-off tag that have rescue's name and telephone number for interested people to take away.

This is a wonderful way to honor the memory of your beloved cat. You could also contact pet food manufacturers about possible donations and/or sponsoring, you could create a gfundme.com page or a page with any of the other crowd funding sites that are available in your country. You could also see if your employer would allow you to arrange a fundraiser at work in the form of a bake sale or something like that. We did this at my job and we were able to provide 2 local shelters with a lot of donated goods and money as well. Shelters can always use things like old blankets and towels so these can be gathered also. This is such a sweet gesture. Your little boy is watching over you from the bridge and knows what you are doing to honor his memory and I bet he's thrilled. Every cat that gets helped because of your generosity will carry a bit of his spirit with him or her for the rest of their lives.
