Can anyone refer me to a documentary, an HBO special, Animal Planet, or Discovery special on the history of our domestic cats? The Canine world has it made in my opinion, everybody knows the origin of dogs from the Wolf/fox ancestory. That topic has been done to death in my opinion. Now that I am a cat owner/lover, I would like to learn more about their origin. Any advice would greatly be appreciated. I just love history, what can I say. Thanks

I don't think a documentary exists, or if it does, it hasn't gained a lot of popularity. My knee jerk reaction was to find one by BBC (because if it's narrated by David Attenborough, it's automatically awesome) but I wound up finding several separate articles you can use to compile your own knowledge.

I listed them chronologically by publication date where available because often times, especially with fossils and history, discovery of new things refer to past knowledge.

Thank you Fur balls and Pink dagger.  You know, I remember reading somewhere that cats originated in Egypt sometime back, I appreciate the insight, and Pink dagger, I will definately look up those listings and see what I can learn, I appreciate the both of your help.

I loved the Joanna Lumley one. There's another BBC documentary on youtube called Mad Cats and English Women. It's not about the origin of cats, it's about rescue workers in London. I loved that one too.

Thanks for the long list of titles @LTS3   and @pinkdagger That's my Sunday evening viewing sorted out.

I love David Attenborough. If I hearhhis voice I'm back watching his programme at once.

Thanks Stew Ball, I have thus far seen the documentary on the "Widespread Popularity of Cats in the Western World", very interesting and informative but now exactly what I am looking for as the "origins" of the domestic cat.  I will be going through that listing from you and Pink dagger.  Even if I do not find exactly what I am looking for, at least I find these documentaries fascinating and I am learning from them.  Thanks again for your help.

Just finished reading the website from messy beast.com - The Domestication of the cat by Sarah Hartwell

Very informative information on the origins of the domestic cat!!!   I learned so much from that website, In fact they all offered a bit of good information.  Appreciate your time in compiling those websites.
