Hello,

My Zazzy , seems to be getting very thin, We just starting watching my granddaughters Kitten, (charlie) until her and her mother get into their new home.   Charile has actually been here about 2 months, and the kitten getting fat. I also need to add zazzy was not happy at first with charlie but now they play often, and my zazzy lets him know when he is done playing.I also recently took a job where I am gone from the home for 5 days and home on weekends , before that  I was with my baby 24-7 . But my son is 27 we live together, and he takes good care of them when I am gone, but he is gone from the house 9-5. I am SO CONFUSED AND WORRIED, FIRST IS HE STRESSED CAUSE I AM GONE? OR IS IT THE LITTLE KITTEN EATING ALL OF THE FOOD, BUT THERE IS ALWAYS FOOD OUT AND BOWLS NOT EMPTY. THEY GET MEOW MIX TENDER CENTERS , HARD, ALL DAY THEN BREAKFAST AND DINNER, FANCY FEAST WET 1/2 CAN EACH. THEY DON'T FINISH THAT EITHER. THE NEW CAT STILL HAS "MUSHY" BOWEL MOVEMENT, BUT IS GAINING WEIGHT. SO MY CONCERN IS THAT MY ZAZZY IS LOSING WEIGHT, HE JUST LOOKS LIKE SINCE I STARTED WORKING HE IS GETTING THIN, HE HAD THE NEW CAT COME INTO HIS HOUSEHOLD, THEN 2 WEEKS LATER MOMMY WENT TO WORK ALL WEEK LONG ,ONLY HOME ON WEEKENDS! SO IDK IF THAT IS IT STRESS ? IF IT IS CAN SOMEONE LET ME  KNOW IF IT IS STRESS WHAT DO I DO FOR MY POOR BABY???

THANK YOU

Whenever a cat is losing weight despite eating, one has to suspect a medical concern, and possibly a serious one.  Is he eating?  If yes, then he needs a vet.  And if he isn't eating then that's a whole other medical issue.  Either way as a rule, healthy animals don't lose weight unless they are put on a diet by humans for that purpose.

Based on what you have said, he has plenty of food available to him.  Resist the temptation (at least for now) to explain his weight loss in terms of either his emotional state or your absence.  The most likely cause is medical.  How old is he?

HELLO,

IT'S KINDA a coincidence that this weight loose started as soon as the new cat came and I started working. ( all week) ! He is not acting any different, and I did notice not eating , AS MUCH!   HE is playing a lot more, and running with the new cat. So IDK, I will have to take him to a vet as soon as I save some pay checks, here in Delaware the vet's are not very good, with payments. They just don't care. If there was ONE WHO LET PEOPLE MAKE PAYMENTS , EVERYONE WOULD PAY IN GOOD FAITH , JUST BECAUSE WE WOULD ALL BE SO GRATEFUL JUST TO HAVE THEM!!! I am not working because I want to I REALLY CAN NOT WORK , BUT HAVE TO TRY JUST TO PAY RENT AND BUY FOOD, MY SON AND I LIVE TOGETHER BUT HE HAS STUDENT LOANS, CAR PAYMENTS, AND BILLS. SO I GUESS I WILL SAVE FOR THE VET! I HAVE TRIED CARE CREDIT AND COULD NOT GET IT AND I DON'T KNOW WHY I HAVE GOOD CREDIT, JUST HAD NO JOB AT THE TIME, JUST DISABILITY.  So  if  if i can keep this job , (IF MY HEALTH ALLOWS) i LL JUST HAVE TO SAVE FOR THE VET. PLEASE NOBODY TELL ME YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE ANIMALS IF YOU CANT AFFORD THE VET BILL. !!!!    THAT'S BULL TOO MANY CAT'S NEED HOMES FOR THAT ATTITUDE!!! BUT THANK YOU  ILL SAVE FOR THE VET!!

THANKS

Ok well you described your cat as very thin.  Can you weigh him and tell us what he weighs?  Can you take a photo?  How much do you think he has lost?

It's impossible for us to help you figure out if his weight is normal with just little descriptions.  If you are concerned you could post some photos of him, especially one looking down on him while he is standing on all 4 legs, and try and getting a weight on him by weighing yourself with him, and then weighing just you, and subtracting the difference.  But it also sounds like you may have misinterpreted his weight, and that he is ok.  If his behavior changes, like he loses energy, or become tired, or acting odd, then you should definitely contact a vet.

The problem could be if he is losing weight, that the only symptom of a serious condition at first could be the weight loss, and then without much warning he may become very sick, and it may be harder and more expensive to get fixed.

Good luck with him and your CAPS key.
