I just lost my kitten today due to fip. We got him from a breeder. Never heard of fip before. After a month after adopting him we noticed his eyes were squinting. We thought it could be an eye infection but vet didn't think so. He was good for two weeks and then became lethargic and would not eat or drink. Spent 1500.00 on vet bills and came to the conclusion he was not going to recover. FIP!! Will get another ragdoll in a few months. Should we get one from the breeder we got our Duke from or are we just asking for trouble and more heartache. Does anyone know if other kittens from same breeder could also develope FIP.

I am so sorry about the loss of your cat. FIP is a horrible disease.
There is some thought that FIP is genetic.
Frankly, I wouldn't get another cat from the same breeder, but that's just me. (Well, actually, I'd bypass breeders and go straight to a rescue group/cat sanctuary/SPCA.) I would call the breeder and let them know about the cat having FIP.
Good luck.

I probably would avoid the breeder also.  How and why FIP develops in some kitties is unknown.  There is strong evidence that multi cat situations are at greater risk.  The why is unknown, maybe genetic maybe stress from being in a multi cat situation it just really is unknown.  Because of the unknown I would look else where for a kitty.  That doesn't mean the breeder is a bad breeder or neglects her kitties, since the cause is really unknown nothing can be done to prevent it.

I agree - I would not get another kitten from the same breeder. FIP is highly contagious. Did you contact the breeder and inform him or her that your kitten died from FIP? Does your purchase contract have anything about a health guarantee and what the breeder may be able to do if a kitten becomes sick within a certain amount of time or dies from an illness?
