Hi everyone! About a week or so ago one of the ferals that we feed came limping on 3 legs. We waited a few days and saw no improvement. Yesterday, we trapped him and got him to the vet. He had an abscess (cat bite) which was infected so they gave him antibiotics drained it & bandaged it up. They neutered him as well. He is now in a big dog crate in our basement with blankets, food, water, litter box & nightlight. We were told to keep him in there for about 4 days. It's hard to see how his leg is since he is laying on it and stays in the back of the cage. He hasn't used the litter box but he did pee because we smell it. You can see the fear in his eyes and I feel so bad. We don't want to release him before knowing he is totally healed. Should I buy cat litter attractant so he uses the box? I know we are helping him and he's warm/safe but I feel so bad!

Thank you for helping him @OrangePoe  You really are doing the right thing, even if it doesn't feel like it at the moment.

Feral cats often prefer dirt to cat litter. Could you get some earth from outside to put in his litter box? It might not be possible, but if you can get some of his smell into the litter box it will help him realise what it's for. Use tissues to clean up his pee and put them in the litter box with the earth.

As I said, it might not be possible. At the moment the main thing is to keep him safe and warm. A wet blanket won't matter too much if it's only for a few days.

When I brought a feral into my home, he had no idea what to do with the litter box.  I tried two litter boxes on with dirt and one with Dr. Elsey's Litter Attract.  When he peed on the floor,  sopped it up and buried it into the litter.  Between the litter attract and the buried tissue, he went to the box right away.  He never used the box with dirt.

Thank you for caring for him.
