Pain options?  I have an 8 year old cat named Munchie who has a history of bilateral patella surgery as a young adult.  He has severe hip dysplasia and should have an FHO (femoral head and neck osteotomy) surgery done, however he also has Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy so we are not going to do the surgery we have opted to just manage his pain as the surgery would be too risky for him.  He has arthritis in both knees, hips and 1 front leg.  He is on raw diet with higher levels of glucosamine and krill oil.  He is on tramadol twice a day.  We are going to start his series of adequan injections over as I was a bad mom and time got away from me so I didn't get them like I should have.  What other options are there for pain?  I know metacam is a big no no and that's what the vet is recommending for him, my dad (semi-retired vet) suggests low dose aspirin once a week (again not so comfortable with that).  He is at a lean weight after being overweight for some time so I'm sure that added to his pain.   I am going to start him back on the Microlactin as well, I ran out and haven't re-ordered.

I also have my 15 & 1/2 year old DeeJay who is severely arthritic in hips and spinal areas so any recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

I know you don't want to use Metacam and I used to be the same way, no Metacam ever until Dr Kris explained why he sometimes uses it.  http://www.thecatsite.com/t/282599/nsaid-use-in-cats   He is using it for his 19 year old kitty with arthritis and CRF.  It is something that has to be done carefully and kidney values need to be watched.  His kitty is also at the point of getting sub-q fluids regularly which I would think would also help with the safety of using Metacam.

My 15 & 1/2 year old has stage 2 bordering stage 3 kidney failure so I am extra careful with what she gets.  I hate seeing them in so much pain but at the same time I really don't want to cause her kidneys to get worse or for her to go into acute kidney failure.  We are waiting on Munchie's blood panel results so we will know where his levels are at.
