This is the cheaper and the more affordable version of Nature's Variety Instinct if you haven't heard of it.  These recipes definitely aren't "packed" because it has like 148 calories per 5.5oz can compared to Instinct which has around 220+ or so.

All the ingredients appear to be normal.  The one thing I keep second looking though is the brown rice (not brewers).  I want to try Duck & Chicken Stew to keep that meat variety that isn't just chicken and turkey: http://prairiepetfood.com/product/homestyle-prairie-natural-canned-cat-food-duck-chicken-stew

Has anybody tried this?  What do you think of the brown rice?

I'm thinking about trying this food since Shanoah likes Nature's Variety Instinct but it's hard to keep buying it because each 5.5oz can is like $3+.

Tried it out once years ago. The cats were so-so on it. At the time, the chunks were rather large and had to be smashed with a fork a bit.

Have you looked at ordering the NV online? I use Chewy.com and occasionally Amazon. A case (12) of the 5.5 oz cans is $20.89 (chicken) to $29.72 (lamb/venison) depending on the type of protein. So, that would breakdown to $1.74 to $2.47 a can.

**Note, those prices are on Autoship**

That's too bad.  I'm going to guess it's a soupy texture and not a pate?

I'll have to look.  I usually get stuff off of Amazon.  I just recently bought a pack of 24 5.5oz Wellness cans for cheap.  Nature's Variety Instinct wasn't on sale but I'll check out the other sites.  Prairie is on sale though for $17.52 for a pack of 12 on Amazon

It was a very chunky stew.
Ah okay, that's good to know.  Usually when foods use terms like "stew" or something similar, I don't take it literally because some companies do that to make their food sound more gourmet, premium, etc.

You can buy Natures Variety from Amazon using their Subscribe and Save. Depending on how many items you subscribe to you can get 5 or 15% off and no shipping

I have both the duck & chicken stew and the turkey & liver in my subscribe and save from Amazon. With my 15% discount for having 5 or more items, they come out to $14.89 a case. You get free standard shipping with the S&S unless you are a Prime member and then it's free 2 day shipping. My cats like the Prairie Homestyle but not all the time. It's one of the foods that Lilith and Sophie run hot and cold towards so I get a case of one or the other every few months or so. Henry's not nearly as finicky as they are. He doesn't seem to tolerate lamb well but he'll eat pretty much anything.

I have about 20 items in my S&S (not all cat stuff but most of it is
) and I rotate the stuff in and out monthly as I need them. I always have 5 things in to keep my 15% discount. I get the dog sized bag of Pure Bites through my S&S. I get an 11.6 ounce bag for $19.88 shipped. Way cheaper than what the Pet twins Co and Smart charge.

Have you signed up to receive NV coupons via email? If not, sign up http://www.naturesvariety.com/tryit You can select which foods you want to receive coupons food (dry, raw, canned). There's usually a coupon every month or so. Whenever I get a coupon for raw food, I print out a bunch to use. Some pet stores will let me use as many coupons as I want, others will only let me use on coupon for each purchase.

No I haven't but I just did.  Thanks for the suggestion!

Well I decided to try the Nature's Variety Prairie Duck & Chicken Stew and Shanoah loved it.  It's basically a cubed canned food recipe.  Definitely a good alternative if your cats don't like pates (Instinct) and if you're looking for something cheaper then Instinct.

i'm reading this thread late, but my two cats enjoy the nature's variety homestyle -- both the chicken and tuna stew, and the duck and chicken stew. i do smush up the chunks a little when i serve it though, but then i do that with pretty much all their canned foods. mine seem to like more like 'minced' or bite sized pieces. my two don't like pate's either.
