Anyone who reads any of my posts knows I'm going through this myself….and I just talked to a friend in the Detroit, Michigan area who is rather unexpectedly getting ready (as if that's possible) to have to put her small dog to sleep. She was truly hoping to do this at her home, as she (like me) hates the idea of her beloved dog's last memories being a terrified trip to the vet.

I told her about this amazing community  - and offered to ask for her if anyone had any sources for a vet willing to do in-home euthanasia of a fairly small dog in the Canton, Michigan area. I'm willing to run all questions through me…..so any suggestions - please let me know!  It's not an emergency (yet)….so anyy thoughts about places appreciated. As I said - she's near Detroit - the north west corner basically of it (all of this is the far South East corner of Michigan). Any suggestions - a phone number, email, website - anything appreciated!

Thanks,

The ASPCA has a website dealing with death of pets. They also have a grief counseling telephone service for people who are considering euthanasia as well as handling the death of a furball. I've read good things about them. They might have a list of vets who do in-home euthanasia. My twin sister had a vet come to her house for Lovey (small dog) when it was her time. As I will do when it is Ritz' time.

Try calling vets in the area for a recommendation - they will know who does this.  You also might try googling "mobile vets" and your zip code.  I've found mobile vets both ways.   Hope your friend finds someone.  This is such a hard time and in-home euthanasia makes it easier on everyone - our beloved pets and ourselves.

I just asked my vet if she would do it & she came.  Her office told me that there are vets who do only this.  Call around to the vets.  Someone will know who does this.  I called the ASPCA hot line after my Rizzo was put to sleep.  They are very kind & might know of someone as well.  Good luck!

I think I am very fortunate here, there is a vet in this area who's entire practice is home euthanasia.  I haven't needed it since knowing about her so I know nothing about her other than she has that practice.  We had a vet from Arizona that used to post here and she said hat vets who do this as the entirety of their practice are usually very good at  it.  Makes sense given the amount of experience they have with it.

I agree, call offices you know and ask them for recommendations. Vets usually have a network of other vets they can refer to if need be - my vet runs a mobile clinic for in-home treatments and euthanasia, and I never would have known had I not Googled her name. She never mentioned her "side business" away from the clinic, and it doesn't say anything about it on her profile for the office we visited, so sometimes it's just on an "ask and you shall receive" basis.

I would start with the owner's vet.  If they have a good relationship with the vet, then the vet may be willing to come over.  There are risks of complications like being unable to get a vein, and potential issues with restraint.  The vet may wish to bring a tech with them to assist, and if it was me, i'd want a catheter placed first so that the administration of the drugs would be effortless.  If you couldn't get a catheter placed, then you would be glad you didn't try to do direct IV injections.  When the drugs flow, you want to know 100% that they are going in and going in correctly.
