Almost all holidays we get the family together and have a big meal, turkey, ham, or roast beef with all the trimmings. Birthdays are celebrated with a cake and ice cream at home after the birthday person picks which restaurant they want to eat at. We have done this for all of my 59 years!

That's pretty much it around here, too. We always have a big family dinner; in colder weather, it's in the house, but during the summer, we're always outside in the backyard. My sister and I have been switching holidays, so one holiday everybody comes here. The next holiday we always go over to her house and hang out down by the creek (their property goes down to the creek, so we'll hang out with dinner down there. She has picnic tables and a large fire ring). We always go to her place for the 4th of July picnic because her town has some great fireworks and we can sit on the front porch to watch them. No parking hassles, no traffic problems.

For birthdays, I have people here and I make what I know the birthday person likes to eat. For my birthday, Rick takes me out to dinner. My sister and BIL and brother and SIL will usually go with us.

Meal traditions are usually ham for Easter, picnics for Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day, turkey for Thanksgiving, and a stuffed crown roast of pork for Christmas. Everybody is coming here for Easter (last I heard anyway). My sister and I usually split the cooking, especially for the picnics. (I'm working on my Easter menu now.

Not really anymore...

Growing up, we always spent Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas having a big dinner at my uncle's house.

My mom was never an "entertainer" type, so we rarely ever had anyone over. After we moved, my ex and I would alternate dinner at their house and his parents' house for holidays.

My current BF & I celebrated this past Thanksgiving & Christmas in our new house. I extend invites to my family (they live 3 hours away) and they're most often turned down, even though we offer to cover the cost of a place to stay overnight. Christmas morning the BF's dad likes to go to IHOP, so we've done that the last 3 Christmases.

I also try and go spend time with my grandma back in NJ on holidays (and whenever I can). Thanksgiving 2013 we were up there. She is my BF's "surrogate grandma" since all his grandparents have passed, and he really enjoys being able to go there with me too.
