I adopted a 6 months old cat recently. She is adorable, but she doesn't know how to play. She is definatey not a lap cat, she doesn't like to be held without her permission. If I want to pet her, she would react. So, I try not to do anything that she might not like. However she likes to play and when we play or chase each other, she keeps on stratching me. Even when I sit on the sofa watching TV ignoring her, she comes and stratches y legs or my head.

She did that to my hands, legs, head and unfortunately to my face. Yesterday I had a stratch right under my eye when watching TV and I was really anxious.

I read many articles about this, and I tried to do all those things, but I couldn't solve it.

Another thing is, she bites my clothes, cables, phone chargers. I thought that her teeth might be itchy and searched for something for her to bite, but I couldn't find anthing in petshops. Do you know why she is going it?

She has many toys, a huge stratching platform, she can wander anywhere in the house (although I have a small flat), she sleeps with me. So, there is no limitation for her to protest. Do you knpw what I can do about this?

PS. Excuse my english if I wrote something incorrectly. Thanks.

The first thing you must do is make sure all those sharp claws are clipped! I bet they are long and sharp and she can't help scratching you when she plays, and you do NOT need to get an eye injury or bleed any more.  If she's not too difficult and you know how to clip claws, you can wrap her in a towel like a burrito and leave one leg out at a time and trim the claws.  If you are not up to this, you can probably get a vet tech to teach you or help you at your vet's office.   The best claw clippers in my opinion are NOT the ones that look like guillotines but ones that look like small blunt-tipped scissors.  My personal favorites can be foun in te BIRD DEPARTMENT of Petco.  They are Petco's own brand and I prefer them to anything they have in the cat department.

As for the biting and chewing things, she IS teething right now and has been for a few months.  [if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:OfficeDocumentSettings> <o:AllowPNG/> 3-4 months the incisors erupt, followed by the canines, pre-molars and molars around 4-6 months.  By the end of 7 months, all the adult teeth should be in.  So you were right in thinking her teeth were "itchy" but that stage will pass soon.  In the meantime, she should have good toys to chew.  Mine particularly like the BANANA made by Cosmic Catnip.  (The covering is very heavy duty fabric, an it's filled with high quality catnip.)  You can find it in most Petco stores or on Amazon, and they also make a "cigar" which is the same, just a different color and shape.

If you want her to be manageable as an adult cat, you will need to do some things she doesn't like for short periods of time, such as picking her up and holding her.  When we have squirmy kittens, we will pick them up and hold them close to our bodies so they feel comfortable and not afraid of falling, and as soon as we feel them relax and stop struggling, we put them down.  We d this frequently until they are no longer squirmy when we pick them up.  This is a very good teaching tool, and will make her a much better adult cat.  I have a 14-year-old who came to me later in life and was totally intolerant of being held.  She still screams bloody murder when picked up but doesn't fight it, and she hushes as soon as I start rubbing her ears.  I can even cut her nails now, although only one foot at a time.  She was never held as a kitten and belonged to my next door neighbor, who died when she was 2 or 3 years old.  Nobody could catch her so they could not rehome her.  Eventually she rehomed herself, here. (Long story I won't go into.)  The point is that even an adult cat can be taught to tolerate what she doesn't like and Ms. Untouchable now comes to me for ear rubs and cuddles too.

@Red Top Rescue  Thank you so much for your reply. It's beeen really helpful.

I bought small blunt-tipped scissors and watched many youtube videos about claws clipping. I'm not sure if I am up to do this since Mia is very fidgety, but I will try.

I bought many toys for keeping her busy and also for her chewing, but she didnt take any interest in chewing toys and she ate cotton parts of other toys. She doesn't like to chew any other thing, she is only into cables :) I am not 100% sure about her age, but she much be at the end of her 7th month now. So, she should be ok soon.

I don't know how I can hold her like you said. I rarely grab her and stroke her without her permission, because she gets really mad and starts sctratching. She never wants to be held and she tries to escape. I might be able to hold her when she gets a little older. I sometimes hold her, but when she looks unconfortable, I don't insist and let her go right away. She has some wounds from her previous life, so I presume she lived with a dog or she somehow got beaten. This might be the reason of her being  a bit distant. I can only be very close to her at night when she sleeps with me. The she comes and kisses me, wants to be as close as she can.

You can also take her to a vet or groomer for her nails to be clipped.  I find with one of my cats, trimming nails is a two person job.  I need someone to hold the squirmmy kitty and then I can clip.  I reward with yummy chicken.

Do you play with her?  If you just plop toys down for her, she may not know what to do with them.  You need to interact with her.  Get a few interactive toys such as a laser pointer, da bird wand toy or other feather wand type toy.  Play with her a few times each day.  Once the play session is down, reward her with a meal or special treat.  When cats play they often act as they are hunting.  The hunt, catch, play with it and then sometime eat it.  So once a play session is over, it helps to reward them with a small bit to eat.

Also be sure that when you are playing with her, you do not use your hands or arms as toys.  It is often fun to put your hand/arm under a blanket and watch the kitten pounce  Or to use your hands to get them to play.  Now your hands/arms have become toys.  Use long armed wand toys to keep your hands/arms at a distance.  The laser pointer is good for this too.

I wake up early in the morning and play with her (we mainly chase each other or play with lazer). Then I go to work and she stays at home alone until I come back (for this time she has many toys). When I come back home I also play quite long, but I only reward her when she scratches her scratching board. I will reward her after playing too from now on.

I never use my hands or arms as toys, but when playing she is runs away from me and comes back and then she tries to scratch my hands, legs or arms. Sometimes she comes to the sofa (not when playing) and when I talk to her nicely, she jumps to my head and scratches. She does that to start a play and I try to show her that it hurts and ignore her in this circumstances (I read to do so), I hope to get this behaviour  less and less...

When you chase her, you are sending a message that you are prey or a fun toy.  That means when she comes after you, she will jump on you, scratch you and even bite.  She thinks you are the toy.  I would stop playing chase and just use the laser.  Try a wand toy.  It really gets them moving.  The da Bird toy is one of the best.  You can find it on Amazon.

Definitely ignore her by getting up when she bites or scratches.  A firm "NO bites or No Scratches".  Then get up and leave for a bit.  Repeat this over and over.

Getting her nails trimmed is a must.  Has she been to the vet recently?  Make sure she is up to date on all shots as well as being spayed.  At her next appt you can ask them to trim her nails and also ask them to show you how.

@ShadowsRescue

Thanks for the advise. I will stop the chasing game then...

She was in the vet around 20 days ago. She is having all shots and she is spayed. The vet trimmed her nails when she was being spayed (about over a month ago), but I need to ask them to teach me.

Here is her picture... I guess she doesn't like her picture taken...

By the way, she ate my plastic brush yesterday, which I use for cleaning. On the other hand, she doesn't have a slight interest in the reward foods. I guess she has a different kind of food taste...

What do you mean she ate a plastic brush?  Did she just chew on it or did you swallow it?  Hopefully she didn't truly eat it or you should get her to the vet.

Just a couple things...I adopted my ~4 years old rescue cat about 9 months ago. She used to bite as soon as I tried to pet her back. Patience is very important with rescue cats like these. I would accidentally forget and pet her back while petting and after a short while, she would let me get two pets in before biting. Then, later, it was more. Now, I'm usually free to pet her and she is not worried anymore about me touching her back. It turns out she has a healed wound there on her spine that the vet said looked she was hit by a car a long time ago.
I hope not.

I didn't dare try to pick her up until after I had her for about a month and 1/2 and I immediately put her back down the first time. She was frozen in fear and didn't even have time to start squirming. Since I put her back down immediately, she realized it was nothing to be fearful about and that I was just picking her up and then putting her back down. The next time I picked her up, I did the same thing. After a while, I would pick her up and hold her for 2 seconds and then I'd put her down immediately. I was able to build up to holding her for about a minute before she started squirming, but I put her down as soon as she started squirming. Now I like to pick her up and put her high above my head once in a while and, at first she was scared, but now she lets me do that for a minute before she starts squirming. I think she likes looking down on me.

Also, she didn't know how to play with wand toys for a long while. As soon as I showed her a wand toy or a long sweatpants drawstring, she would cry in distress when it was "taken away" while I was moving it around to try to play with her. She would cry and then just sit there, upset that I didn't just give it to her, so I cut the feather toys off the string and would just give them to her and she loved that and would play by herself. It took ~7 months for her to learn how to play with a wand toy when I brought out the Da Bird for the first time. She was finally ready to play properly and awed by the Da Bird feather swooshing around in the air.

So, try to be patient and don't try to pet her regularly yet. Your cat can learn to play. After about 5 months or so, my cat tries to groom the hair on my head sometimes. I know she's really happy then. She really did that after I introduced the Da Bird and new food. That reminds me, I have to go stock up on Da Bird feathers right now...that and Vet's Best hairball tablets she loves that stopped her throwing up.

Also, yes, clip her long claws. I had the same problem with my rescue cat. I was able to trim 7 of the front claws after I had her for a month, but then I wasn't able to do it after I had her longer because she would cry and I didn't want to hurt her, so I'd give up. I got scratched up until the vet trimmed her sharp claws. I am going to try the towel burrito thing and also get the small blunt-tipped scissors @Red Top Rescue suggested!

Cat's are trainable. I am not a fan of abrupt words like NO but I do say " no claws, soft paws please" when claws come out at playtime. I also ask him to, Put the teeth away please! He does as he is asked at least with me, not so readily with others. It really is all about tone. Sparticus was no fan of cuddles as a youngster. It wasn't until he was 2ish that he began to stretch his chin and head butt for tickles in the desired spot. Now I can't get him off of me! He is 7, I always handle my young animals alot. Grooming and playtime are highly tactile and never rough.

I have a cat that my male made friends with and invited home to dinner. He decided to stay. It took about 2 wks to be able to pet him and we're in the process of learning to hold. After watching my vet tech - who is awesome - I have found that by picking him up not as I normally would but by putting my 'holding' arm around the outside of all 4 legs so that he can't claw his way out of my arms and scratching his checks which is a 'comfort move' as is rubbing their ears when they are laying down, we have gotten up to holding for 2 - 3 minutes while walking to the kitchen for food rather than the 30 seconds and then terror and clawing his way away from me. Also, wanted to ask if you were aware that when the tail starts the twitching from side to side that this is a sign of 'i'm not happy with this situation!' That's when the claws come out and they're attacking. I learned that the hard way. I say 'OW or OUCH' loudly when one of mine hurts me and it took very little time for them to understand my tone, yanking my injured limb away and rubbing it and saying 'that hurts or you hurt me' for them to play differently with me and only be aggressive when I didn't read their ' leave me alone signs. I hope things are going well with you and your fur baby.

I tell Smokey "no faces",  "soft paws" or "ouch, that hurts mommy" (sometimes I'll say "uncle" haha) when she gets a little too rough with me. She doesn't readily scratch dh or our friends, just me, but she always backs off when I ask her to.

@serpil  Mia is only the second other cat I have read about who will jump at her human companion's head.  I did so much reading to find out about this behaviour the first year I had Mouse but found very little.  Mouse would do it regularly to me, whether I was sitting on a chair, kneeling on the floor, or standing.  Thankfully he has never done it to anyone other than me, and certainly within 6 months he knew he was not supposed to do it, and it is now only an occasional play manoeuver.  With that particular behaviour I found the only way to show him it was not OK to do and that I wanted him to stop was to stay completely still and ignore when he did it (which was surprisingly hard because after I got over the shock of the first time when he landed full on belly in my face and his legs spread wide out to his sides I couldn't help laughing).  I was very lucky in that Mouse did not use his claws to hold on, which I suspect Mia is doing.

The most effective way to change a behaviour is to make sure there is no reward for the behaviour you don't want her to repeat.  Best to get in before the behaviour and avoid, but if you have to go through the undesirable phase then take care not to reward but introduce a delay before giving her what she wants.  That way hopefully the negative behaviour is not incorrectly understood by her to get what she wants.

Do you see a look in her eye or a change in her posture before she jumps up at you?   If so I suggest slowly and smoothly standing up as tall as you can and look as stern and firm as you can so she gets the message that you have seen what she is going to do.    Then slowly back away and try to engage her in alternative play so she doesn't actually get to the attack phase for getting your attention.  Mouse will look at me with a direct gaze and pupils dilated when he is about to jump, and with him he looks very cheeky rather than aggressive.  Sometimes I will see him fidgeting with his behind so I can see he is about to jump.  Sadly for me my blue boy discovered I don't have eyes in the back of my head and when he fancies a head attack these days he usually does it from behind me but I don't mind that so much (and when he is bored and behind me I try to stay aware of what he's up to LoL).   If getting in first isn't an option, again move slowly and smoothly but bow your head and protect your face as much as you can as your face and neck are your most vulnerable parts for her to harm.  Stay very still and when she calms and backs off then stand up, move away slowly and ignore her or move to a different room so she can calm her self.

If at any point she is really hurting you say OUCH firmly but not shouting and stay as still as you can while protecting yourself:  I like to stay away from NO when wanting Mouse to stop hurting me so he knows the difference between what he can use selective hearing for and what he can't.  It is a word he only hears when I am in pain so it is easier for him to associate with his action and learn not to do it.

If, as you say, Mia is biting, scratching and jumping at you when she wants play and attention this sounds very like Mouse when he was a youngster.  I had to be very consistent with him for him to learn that making cute faces and cute poses on the floor, or playing with a toy in front of me would get my attention but that the bites etc would get me to be still or to leave him alone.  He did learn, and he learned to be the cutest critter you could imagine.   What helped me understand some of the behaviours he was trying out on me was to think of how I had seen him play with his fur mom.   If you think about cats and kittens playing together what Mia is doing with you is more like that, and what she needs to learn is that some things are not OK for you because you don't have fur as protection, and you are much bigger than her and she can be squashed.

BTW, Mouse likes to be squashed when he's playing and loves nothing more than ending plays with me leaning over him, squishing his body to the floor like his mother used to do and then ending with snuggles.   This is another thing to try out with Mia as you get to see how she reacts with some of the other play and handling techniques as the body pressure may be calming for her and offer a more acceptable way of 'holding' her for things like claw cutting.   My previous cats did not like to be held or controlled in any way and the only way to pill or clip claws for the strongest one was to hold her firmly between my knees and thighs with me kneeling on the floor, using my body weight to hold her back in place and one hand to hold her chest and head in a way she couldn't bite me....  other hand free to clip or pill.  With clipping you have to have your arm infront of the neck but holding her back firmly so she can't bite but you can use that hand to hold the paw you want to clip.

For getting Mia more used to being held, you might want to try very brief hold when she has chosen to rest with you, just placing your arm around her briefly and slowly work towards more of a hold or picking up.  My 'girls' learned to tolerate being held briefly if I didn't actually hold them but lifted them and positioned them to lay or sit on my arm /lay against my shoulder but without feeling they couldn't jump off any time they wanted.  The minute they felt they were not in control they would panic and that sounds a bit like your girl.

Sorry this is so long but hope at least some of it helps.

To make claw clipping easier.  You can roll the fur baby up in a towel and release 1 leg at a time to trim the claws.  It makes for much easier control and less stress all the way around, with many, many fewer war wounds. and a quicker clipping time.
