I know Whole Foods is mostly on the west coast but I decided to go in one that was right next door to Petco to check out their cat foods.  Not surprisingly everything was pretty expensive.  A 3oz can of well known brands like Wellness and Avoderm were $1.89 (compared to $1.40 or so at Petco).

But they do have their own brand called Whole Paws which comes in various recipes for 89 cents per 5.5oz can.  Although I didn't buy any of it yet but when I was standing there, it looked like everything checked out with no carrageenan, wheat, corn, soy, menadione, and by-products.  Meats were listed as #1 as well.  The guaranteed analysis checked out as well.

Although it's probably a slim chance, has anybody tried this food?  I'm actually surprised it's 89 cents.  The only issue I see when I search this food is bloggers criticizing them when it was first released in 2013 or so because they were suspicious of where the ingredients came from.  After doing another search, apparently it's made in China (but only one blogger mentioned this and I doubt it's true) but I wasn't paying attention to any indication of that when I was looking at the can.

I've bought Whole Paws at our Whole Foods, though I seem to recall that the pate foods have carrageenan, although that might have changed... or maybe the "shreds" (which are formed, not actual meat shreds) don't have it because they have potato as a binder? In any case, yes, I've bought Whole Paws and fed it. I don't now because of the carrageenan (which I generally try to avoid) and the potato (which one of our cats can't eat). It seemed like the carbs in the foods weren't too bad; I wrote to the company twice to ask for figures to calculate carbs but nobody ever wrote back.

The cats' verdicts on Whole Paws were mixed. Our previous cat would eat the pates. (She was sick and difficult to please when I fed them to her so this was something!) Our new cats didn't much like the pates when they tried them but one of them loved the shreds; I think they might have been chicken/salmon or beef/salmon. Whole Paws seemed like a very decent food for the price and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind feeding the carrageenan or potato.

i think it is ok to feed. I too have read it. My cat refuses to eat beef or salmon so I will not feed it to him. But I shop there all the time so I wish he would

Hmmm...I actually wasn't paying attention if the cans I looked at were pates or shreds.  But the ones I picked up definitely didn't have carrageenan in them, that's usually the first thing I look for when I pick up a can and look at the ingredients.  I know there was three recipes they had at the store: Chicken, turkey, and white fish.

After taking a look at their recipes on their site.  The ones I looked at were shreds....specifically Shredded Chicken Dinner in Gravy, Shredded Whitefish, and Turkey, Chicken & Giblets Dinner.  They did have guar gum in them as a bonding agent but I don't remember if it had potatoes or not.  If it did then I probably just skipped over it since I don't mind feeding that.  Definitely no carrageenan though, in those ones at least.

Here's what Truth About Pet Food thinks:

I calculate about 25% carbs from the guaranteed analysis. You want to aim for about 10% or less. Weird thing is I can't figure out what ingredient in their list has the carbs.
Sorry but that article is a bit old from when the food first came out.  It's also nit picking a couple of recipes (kibble and canned) out of a large selection of foods for cats and dogs.

Whole Paws is better than Fancy Feast and Instinct cat food. It doesn't have fruits or vegetables. I think sugar is more harmful than carregeenan to obligate carnivores. I used to give my cats Stella and Chewy freeze dried raw food, but they changed the ingredients. The cats won't eat it anymore.I still give them Evo chicken/turkey, Whole Paws salmon/chicken, and Weruva double dip beef/chicken au jus canned food. I don't buy the fish formulas because they are allergic.
