Here's my earlier post with more details if necessary. Basically my IBD kitty had been taking the Vet's Best Digestive Aid pill that contains psyllium and slippery elm every day for months. Since her last bad episode (detailed in other post) she refuses the pill. I have been giving her ondansetron every night to help with the nausea and it seems to be working well. I bought some NOW brand slippery elm from iherb.com so that I could mix some of that up to add to her food or syringe feed to help calm her system.

She started her usual metal licking earlier this week which I'm now thinking is an indication of nausea... like when my dog starts obsessively licking the floor. So I made up some slippery elm slurry with instructions from here . I used the method of 1 teaspoon to 1/2 c water and simmered it on the stove for a few minutes and then refrigerated it. This method seemed more diluted than some others I have seen.

I tasted it and it was not bitter and the expiration date was way in the future. To me it tasted like tea and smelled a bit like sawdust. I gave her just under 3ml (less than the 1tsp (5ml) dose recommended) that evening and she threw up about 12 hours later. A few hours later I gave her 3ml more. About 9 hours later I saw her headed to the little box and followed her (which I have been trying to do as much as possible to monitor things). She had a large amount of foul-smelling greenish diarrhea with a very significant amount of bright red blood in it. She left the litter box and went right back to eating and acting normally.

Next day she had fairly well formed stool with no blood, just a little soft and stinky. I'm hoping the blood was just a one time thing. I know this can happen with IBD, but normally her issue is vomiting not diarrhea and I've not seen blood since she was a little kitten with coccidia. Could this be from the slippery elm or just a coincidence? I have been afraid to give her any more. Like I said she had the slippery elm that was in those digestive aid pills for months, just never in this form. It is possible I suppose she has had blood other times prior to this and I just missed it because she covered it up well and I didn't see it fresh.

I could find no mention anywhere online of bad effects from slippery elm, only good things mentioned. Anyone have any bad experiences with it?
