The pet rescue group I work with, Pet Pro Life, had a cat, Sweetie, returned to us after 5 years of adoption. The reason being that the people could no longer deal with the chronic diarrhea - watery stool, sometimes with mucus.
Sweetie is very appropriately named - very loving kitty who must now live in a kennel instead of the warm embrace of a home.
Sweetie has been to see 3 respected veterinarians and the following is a brief description of the treatments tried:
Tests (Fecal Flotation) for parasites - none found
Dewormed with Droncit
CBC + BCP + T4 tests - all normal
Treated with antibiotic Baytril
Treated with Viokase - pancreatic enzyme
Treated with Seacure - amino acid
Surgically searched for cancer - none found
Treated with Flagyl - slight improvement
Treated with Presnisolone
So we've had her back for a few months and aren't having any success either. Options still on our list to try include slippery elm, further surgical investigation.
I'm wondering if anyone has had any similar experiences and could offer some insights on how to treat, how to cure would be perfect, how to provide a good quality of life for her if this is not treatable.

I'm sure you have already tried this but... what kind of food is she eating? I know my dog has cronic diarrhea on some kinds of food. Have they tried Kaopectate? Roland, my dog gets diarrhea at the drop of a hat - and we give him this - also oatmeal and pumpkin...

Sorry I wasn't more help

Well, I've heard that - Kaopectate & pumpkin - before from one of my fellow rescuers who is more holistic than I am. I'll pursue this. Thank you!

Hello:

I am sooo sorry abt the little one - how horrible.
Petco sells pet care products under the brand name Petgold which also includes a diarrhea control product. It is all natural mostly Pectin and Keotin. This has worked great for my Loki and
he also loves it as long as it is mixed in with his wet food. Might want to give it a try.

Good luck and I hope you find the cause and a permanent home.

Can't get the little one out of my head - another thought - how about going the herbal route and consulting an herbalist?

for example:

Slippery Elm Bark - calmer of irritated intestinal tissues, diarrhea treatment, high in minerals & nutrients necessary for healing

Garlic - stimulator of the digestive organs, extremely valuable in treating intestinal infections

Yarrow - useful in treating diarrhea & irritated mucus membranes

A special tincture can then be made based on the symptoms. One thing to remember we are all so used to wanting immediate results - herbs aim for long term results and may take a while to kick in.

BUT might be well worth checking out.

I recently heard about the slippery elm & I'm not opposed to trying them. I'll have to ask around for a recommendation for a local herbalist.
The poor kitty is losing weight now because she won't eat the Hill's d/d anymore. She begs to have someone hold her and since she's irresitible, she gets held. I'm trying to find someone to build an enclosure for her in my coverted garage so that I can bring her home from the kennel. I feel that the stress of living in a kennel contributes to her condition -- although she has had the condition for the 5 years before coming back to us.
We're going to try an organic raw food diet next. I've received a couple of recommendations for doing that. I'm researching what to include and hope to start tomorrow.

Here is the e-mail of a herbalist I have used for my little boy (giardia) and my girl friends cat (infalmmatory bowl decease)

Her name is Tami S. Karnes and her E-mail is
[email protected] or 800-230-5166

I would highly recommend her and her prices are VERY resonable
