I've been feeding my 7 year old cat the tins of Purina Gourmet Gold and Pate since last June. I noticed recently that she's twitching and having a few body jolts.
I took her to the vets and he did a thorough check up and bloods that came back normal. He doubted it was neurological as she's not showing any other symptoms and doesn't think it's a tumour. He has never seen that type of twitching before and he's been a vet for a number of years.
I decided to change her wet food (she also gets some dried food) as wondered if that was causing her twitches.
She's been off the Purina food for a week now and the twitching has dramatically reduced and I've not seen her have these horrible body jolts. She's still twitching a bit but not as much as before.
I then happened to come across an article online whilst reading the news about an American lawsuit against Purina by dog owners who claim a certain type of dried food allegedly caused fits, seizure and kidney failure in their dogs and some of the dogs died.
Has anyone else experienced a negative effect on their cats with Purina food? I'm hoping that the longer my cat stays off that brand the less she'll twitch until they disappear all the time. Just find it too much of a coincidence that I change her wet food and within 2 days her twitching visibly reduces and then I read that article about the dog food allegedly containing toxins such as anti freeze.
Any thoughts?? Thanks

The question you should be asking is, "is this food bad for my cat?" Some food work fine on some cats, some don't. There are all kinds of lawsuits against all kinds of companies, but that doesn't mean every single owner had issues with that particular food. Scare stories abound on the internet. Some are true, some are not. Who knows, really?

In your case, it seems that is at least a loose correlation, so it doesn't look like that particular brand works too well for your cat. Since she seems to twitch less after you switched out of it, I would continue avoiding that brand and flavor.

Have you tried calling Purina? I would report this and see what they say. Can't hurt, though I agree with @FhiCat  it could be unrelated and I wouldn't put too much faith in reports about pet food lawsuits.

If you call them, let us know what they say.
