Just curious had anyone that has cat Allergies found a cat ( not any specific breed) that they aren't allergic to? I want a cat but can't put up with the sneezing or cough up big bucks for a hypoallergenic breed. I don't react at My parents house but if i put my nose in the cats fur I will have a reaction. Any hope for me ??

I'm allergic to cats as well....or I thought I was.

I have always been allergic to fur (so a lot of different animals). But when I met my fiancé's family cat, I was able to hold her, stick my face in her, and nothing happened!! Now this cat was pure white, long haired and so silky soft! I couldn't believe it. This cat came from a pet store, so it wasn't a specific breed or anything, however they suspected it had a bit of Turkish Angora in her, due to her looks and long silky fur. I then knew that there must be a cat out there that I could own!

When we were ready to adopt a cat (years after this "event" happened), we searched for months! Long story short, we now have a medium/long haired cat, which I can live in complete harmony with! She feels exactly like my fiancé's family cat does - silky soft, long fur.

That being said, I find that I have to do more cleaning around the house to keep the fur to a minimum, and I scoop cat litter everyday to keep the odors down to a minimum too. I will also add that I brush her almost everyday to keep up with her shedding! Fur in the garbage is better than fur in the air LOL. The only time I have a mild reaction, is when she rubs her nose on my neck, then I get a bit itchy, nothing more.

I've also heard that allergies tend to decrease when you live with them (24/7). I sneezed quite a bit for good solid week when we got our kitty, but after that, everything has been fine! There is hope - just start sticking your face into all kinds of cats and see what happens :lol3:

Good luck!

I think depends from what you are allergic too.

I mean I'm allergic to some cats and some dogs....and this is because I'm allergic to dust mites, so in certain conditions animals can trigger my reaction.

I have a cat short hair tabby mix, and I found him in a shelter, before adopt him I have been there many times to spend a bit of time with him and see how I was reacting, I was ok with him, but bad with another kitten there. We are together since three years now, and I'm fine, a few days ago I visited a friend with two long hair cat, and I had a bad reaction.

My mother is allergic to any kind of cats, included mine, but I think she is allergic to the protein cat have in the saliva (a source of allergy), that make it stronger.

People say that there hypoallergenic cat breed, but I don't know how this is true:

Good luck!

I am allergic to cats and own a cat :) I think it's about trial and error sadly but it is mostly that she has NEVER been an outside cat and never been outside in grass and whatnot. I have found that if they are indoor only and I don't rub my eyes, I am fine :) There is hope!
