Cat sick after vaccinations

Hello,

I took my ten month old tabby in for vaccinations on Thursday. He received the "Fel Rhin-Cali-Panl-Chla (I think this is distemper combo part 1?), the Feline Leukemia #1, and the rabies vaccination. He seemed a little sleepy the first afternoon but I was told this was normal. Since then he has been having diahrrea. I have also been told by friends that vaccinations made their pets have diahrrea as well, but today (Day 4 since original vaccination date) he is still having diahrrea and went outside the box. He is not following me around and is very tired, which is unusual for him because he is such a playful cat.

He *might* have gone outside the box because he accidentally kicked off the hood while he was going earlier today and it scared him. I have since removed the hood. He also has another larger box that he hasn't touched as much.

Is 4 days still considered normal for a cat to be sick after vaccinations? I am planning on taking him to the vet to have him checked out, but I don't know how worried I should be.

This is definitely an abnormal reaction.  You need to call the vet first thing in the morning and speak with them.  Is he eating?  Be sure to keep him hydrated as well.

It is not common for a cat to be sick 4 days afterward; however, I have had prolonged issues in my cats that have other medical issues (immunocompromised, IBD, etc...) I would be most concerned about dehydration due to the diarrhea. I think it very wise to have him checked out by your vet.

With that said, I choose to give 1 vaccine at a time and wait at least 2 weeks before giving a second vaccine. Is way,if they do have a reaction, I know what vaccine it is to. Luckily my vet has no issue with this and is fine withholding vaccines when one of my cats has had problems.

As a side note, doe s your kitty go outside? I assume yes since he was given the Leukemia vaccine. If so, when was he last dewormed?

My cat was just recently vaccinated and she experienced about four days of feeling/acting funky. She had no diarrhea troubles though, and as other posters have mentioned, dehydration is an issue to worry about and watch for. Belle totally crashed for a good 24 hours, and barely ate anything other than a little dry food. Had it continued past the afternoon/night/morning after I would have taken her back. For the next three days after this her sleepiness/lethargy lessened and each day there was marked improvement. If your kitty is not improving or is getting worse in behavior then you definitely need to get her checked! Every cat reacts a little differently to vaccines, and hopefully yours is just feeling under the weather and will recover soon!

I would call the vet and make another appointment.

My cat went through the same thing, and it turned out she was allergic to the vaccine so she received fluids, an anti-inflammatory, and an anti-histamine 4 days after her original vaccine. After her second visit she bounced back to normal!

Usually vaccine reactions happen and last for a couple of days after the shots so for 4 days that is definitely odd, I would recommend taking your cat back to the vet to get checked out.  In the future if you get your cat vaccinated I would have them administered separate and I would have it pre-treated so it doesn't have reactions.  Usually they will give it a couple of injections such as benadryl and a steroid to counteract reactions, wait for a while then give the vaccinations and monitor the cat for the day at the hospital.
