Hi, Im new and I found this site a couple of days ago. Dori, my kamikaze cat jumped on tje stove a few weeks ago and her foot is healing nicely. Brought her to the vet and she turned into demon kitty, hissing, growling, howling... ive never seen her this way. Are there any other cat owners who their cats act totally different while at the vet. The vet had to put her to sleep for about 15 minutes to do the exam.. Dori was perfectly fine after she got home. Haha. Its nice to meet all these cats here on this site. :)

Dori is gorgeous!

My Swanie has to be sedated when he goes to the vet for a checkup. He is 25 pounds, strong kitty, and does NOT like the vet.  At home he's a super sweet love bug.

Dori is beautiful.  Her markings and colouring remind me of the first cat I ever lived with but she wasn't really the sweetest of cats, she was a hyperactive terror.  LoL. ( I loved her to bits).  I hope Dori's paw is all healed up very soon and doesn't continue to give her any pain.  It is good she settled as soon as you got her home, some cats continue to be distressed after they get home too.

I shared my story with you over in your other thread so you know I have experience of this sort of frightened behaviour at the vet too - my little snowleopard was always an angel when she  eventually came out of the sedation, and was as gentle as anything the whole time she wasn't at the vet (or keeping her litter sister in check).

Hi, Welcome to The Cat Site.

My cats all hate the vet too, they don't hiss or growl but a few of them are so scared of him they pee themselves when he tries to touch them. And he's the sweetest, gentlest vet ever!

Hope Dori is feeling better soon.

Dori looks like a sweetheart, hope her paw heals quickly.   Welcome to TCS, everyone is so helpful.

My current cat likes the vets' office, lots to see!  He's very tolerant, and enjoys the attention.   He's just a kitten though, so he's pretty fearless.  He's been there a couple of times and they've treated him very well, so it's an interesting adventure for him.

My last cat was very ill the last year or two of her life, and she got used to going to the vet, but when she was younger she hated the whole process.  There was an  "incident" where the vet rushed her and she defended herself!    (The vet actually stuck his hand in the carrier and tried to drag her out because she wouldn't come out on her own!  Silly man, he was a dog vet... his partner thought it was hilarious that he would do something that stupid.)  Mostly, old Zippy just complained a bit by growling at them, and they handled her gently and slowly and things went just fine; I think she was just establishing who was in charge.

My calico yells at the top of her lungs when we go to the vet, in fact in usually echoes throughout the building.  Someone usually thinks there is a cat in distress- no that's my Glee.

I have found that 2 things help a lot:

1) Our current vet is less than 10 minutes away, a couple of miles

2) They pump Feliway into the exam rooms, she starts peeping and purring not yelling

I have also been known to spray myself, the car, and the carrier with Feliway.  It is a synthetic hormone.

Me too.   Well I don't usually spray me / my clothes but the carrier, the car, and any blankets I am about to use I certainly do.  Find it helps a lot for car journeys and cutting down any stress about being in the carrier for Mouse,

Thanks everyone! I look forward to hearing about all of your kitties. :) Dori stopped limping yesterday for her foot, so I definitely think she is feeling better. She is also more energetic. Haha.

Oh goody, so now we can look forward to posts about Dori getting in to trouble, Dori being cute and Dori photographs.
Make sure and tell her she is not to go having any more accidents @I am pawsome.
(Not that our kitties ever listen to us when we tell them that).

For my cats what works best to get them through going to the vet is I have actually harness trained almost every cat I have. It started with my cat, Cleo, she had clostophobia being in a carrier and would be a nightmire after being inside even when young kitten. So she has learn how to go on a harness and leash. I just have continued that since.
I have also been told by my vet that calico cats give more "catitude" which is what Cleo and my kitten Ginora are. Ginora was just at the vet for an eye infection and did her first 100% harness at the vet without the carrier and had no problems and was extemely friendly a completely different from when she got her shots.
