Hi, I just officially joined this site. In the past I have browsed through site and learned a lot from other members. I honestly don't know what took me so long to sign up but I'm glad to have joined.

Currently I am at my wits end with one of my 6 cats. In fall of 2014 he was diagnosed with liver issues, given some meds and a vet prescribed diet. We had a little success on and off. He stopped eating his prescibed food and I started letting him eat what he wanted within reason, the vet said as long as he didn't have diarrhea or throwing up to let him eat.

Fast foward to early 2015, vomiting returned but sporadically. It would last 2 to 3 days at the most, i gave him metoclopramide then his ravenous appetite would return. All this with no to little weight gain. Last month, i was able to get his blood work done because to me and the vet tech had about 95% of the hyperthyroidism symptoms. I was so excited in the waiting room because the vet also thought it was thyroid and he is only 7yrs old and his prognosis could be a full recovery after pills.

Well after his bloodwork came back, there was nothing in his T4 count...it is still his liver. I have been researching and reading everything about liver issues and there are so many liver diseases. I have NO concrete diagnoses. For now he is doing ok from things I've impleted from reading on the internet. I just wish I had a name or proper diagnosis. I will read and research about a disease and he has one or two symptoms more or less than the disease i'm researching.

I don't know what to do, i've had him looked at by 2 vets and they basically tell me to keep him comfortable. I get upset because that sounds like there is little or no hope, but when I read and research a lot of kiities that have been in worse shape than him have recovered. I just don't know what to treat him for; fatty liver, IBD, or triad disease!

Currently I switched him to a grain free diet his meds are metoclopramide, metadozile (sp) it's an antibiotic/inflammatory med. I am supplementing him with probiotics and Denosyl along with small frequent feedings. Just as yesterday we went from gray loose stools to harder dark brown ones! I'm happy about that! I just want to see him gain more weight and be more active.

I'm sorry for such a lengthy introduction, but he is such a healthy looking kitty and wants to play, it breaks my heart just to watch him lay and watch the other kitties play. Thanks for any help. :-)

You say  you have had him to two different vets, are  either of them specialists?  I didn't know there was such a thing as board certified specialists for  kitties until  I  had done 6 1/2 years of vet hopping with a chronically ill  kitty.  There is definitely a difference.  My kitty goes to a certified feline specialist there are also internists for kitties.  I don't know if it is normal practice but in this area kitties only see an internist with a referral.

Hi Denice!

I believe they were both VMD's. I will have to do a search in my area and find one. Thank you for the info. :-)
